New Yorks coronavirus outbreak has violently erupted over the past few days, and the state is now driving the national epidemic while on the West Coast, public health experts are wondering if an early and aggressive response saved California from a similar fate.
California reported some of the earliest coronavirus cases in the United States in late January. And in the first week of March, California and New York were neck and neck on cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. But over the past week, New York case counts have doubled every few days, and the state now has nearly 10 times the cases California does: 38,000 to 4,200.
Infectious-disease experts say early maneuvers in California, especially in the Bay Area first discouraging people from gathering in crowds and then ordering them to shelter in place may have had a dramatic impact, even if they came only a few days ahead of those in New York.
But other factors may also be in play. New York is testing far more people three times as many as California and therefore identifying more cases, for example. And its possible that whats happening 3,000 miles away could be Californias future.
New York may just be three or four days in front of us. Were going to see an increase in the number of cases here as well, said Dr. Warner Greene, a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco who specializes in HIV but is studying the new coronavirus. Days matter they really matter. You think youre fine, youre absolutely fine, but this thing is just waiting to explode.
But we went into shelter in place quicker; we got people apart quicker, Greene said. That could be a contributing factor ...

could cuomo be lying about it to justify his cry for 30k ventilators?
It was never serious in “ground zero” NYC:
Subways never closed
The homeless never touched
Illegals never touched
Gay festivals never touched
Muslims never touched
STILL a sanctuary and open borders city
Etc.
Its simple, Cuomo and his pals told everyone not to worry about it and to go out and party like you going to die, and now they are.
Beats me, it’s not like Newsom isn’t trying to catch up...
I think NY got seeded heavily by Italy.
Would have expected West coast to get seeded by China. But between Trump’s China travel ban and Asian countries taking it seriously, we weren’t riddled with seeds.
NYC is a sh*thole
I wonder what the contribution is of population being far less dense in CA than in NYC, and the widespread use of private cars in the former.
If California’s numbers stay significantly lower than New York’s through the duration of the Wuhan Flu I predict Governor GRUEsom will be touted as the next RAT savior, and he’ll get kudos over Andy The Ventilator from the MSM!
Californians drive to work.
New Yorkers commute in crowded subways and buses, and walk crowded streets.
We dont live on top of each other in CA. possibly the cities do AND we dont have mass transit such as subways carting the masses everywhere we use CARS!!!!
What early and aggressive actions did CA do exactly? All I heard was a bunch of doom and gloom from their nutjob governor
New York got it from Iran and Italy as well as China. Molecular epidemiology shows that. The China travel ban helped
California also doesn’t have population dense urban hell holes, except San Francisco which is small.
Because we have trains and buses and subways...and all kinds of public transportation. California has cars, cars, cars.
Is CA proving info on the criteria used for testing and the number of people tested?
Latitude?
Close living quarters in very low income areas? That seems more prevalent in NY than CA.
Yep... Chinese New Year putting thousands on the streets the first week of February.
I know a CA resident that is almost certainly COVID positive. The person has been waiting one week for a test result, and their spouse and child were not tested. The person was told when getting their test that starting the next day (Last Sunday) only those hospitalized or over 65 would be tested at all.
