Stanford medical professors: COVID-19 death toll estimates may be 'orders of magnitude' too high
The Blaze ^ | March 26,2020 | Giancarlo Sopo

Posted on 03/26/2020 6:30:11 PM PDT by Hojczyk

did they predict this?

The two professors argue that the best evidence of the coronavirus death rate being significantly lower than what is being reported may lie in the Italian town of Vò. On March 6, the town's 3,300 residents were tested. Of these, 90 tests came back positive, indicating a prevalence of 2.7% of the population having the virus.

If one were to apply this to the entire province where the town is located, which has a population of 955,000, it would mean there were actually 26,000 infections at the time, and not just the 198 that were officially confirmed. This would be 130 times greater than the number of reported cases. Since Italy's case fatality rate of 8% is estimated using the confirmed cases, Bendavid and Bhattacharya write, "the real fatality rate [of the virus] could in fact be closer to 0.06%."

A 'cause for optimism'?

The two Stanford Health Policy experts even said the virus' mortality rate might be on par with that of the seasonal flu:

Existing evidence suggests that the virus is highly transmissible and that the number of infections doubles roughly every three days. An epidemic seed on Jan. 1 implies that by March 9 about six million people in the U.S. would have been infected. As of March 23, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 499 Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. If our surmise of six million cases is accurate, that's a mortality rate of 0.01%, assuming a two week lag between infection and death. This is one-tenth of the flu mortality rate of 0.1%. Such a low death rate would be cause for optimism.

A universal lockdown 'may not be worth the costspublic policy experts should focus their measures on protecting the elderly and expanding medical capacity.

When all is said and done, it would not be surprising if the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is very similar to that of the flu.

This is one-tenth of the flu mortality rate of 0.1%.

Whoops.

Well, something caused Wuhan to operate their Crematoriums 24/7 for weeks. Perhaps another Cultural Revolution?

I think the CDC panicked...

There great for modeling...like climate modeling

I’m betting on it no worse than the flu...

If this thing isn’t at least in the ballpark of a biblical cataclysm, we need to track down the people responsible for the hysteria. if they can’t be charged with anything, they at least need to be permanently discredited so that they can never, ever do this sh*t again.

Sadly, I think it’s too late to back this down quickly. Around here we have a vast majority of residents cheering the fact that the police announced they would be out on patrol confronting and ticketing people not practicing proper “social distancing”.

They are eager to report to the cops that they may have seen landscapers out working too close together.

I asked them in a fb post to please keep in mind the rights that were endowed to us by our creator while out on patrol. Basically got laughed at.

“I’m betting on it no worse than the flu...”

Then why wherever there’s been a serious outbreak the hospitals and medical services are beyond the breaking point?

That’s not a model, that’s reality.

Because everywhere in this country hospitals are underbuilt.

Thats the stories that are coming out now, and that it was done on purpose.

I hope they’re right but for certain parts of the US, it’s getting bad and maybe about to get worse.

For those of us out there in the lesser affected areas, keep on with the social distancing, good hygiene, good nutrition, etc.

Flattening the curve is of the utmost importance. I don’t want to see our ER’s and ICU units any more overloaded than some of them are already.

All Freepers - regardless of whether you’re a FluBro or a Doomsday Prepper, please stay safe!

“Because everywhere in this country hospitals are underbuilt.”

That’s why we have this problem every year with the common flu, right.

“Thats the stories that are coming out now, and that it was done on purpose.”

You better stop digging, you’re sounding like an idiot.

They’re not really comparable. With the right data, modelling for infectious diseases is fairly reliable and very useful. (With large-scale testing finally taking place, the data will soon be available.) None of that can be said for climate modelling.
