'My mother is not expendable': As Trump itches to get U.S. back to work, experts warn of deaths, economic calamity

The clamor for a swift return to normal has started to pick up in recent days - particularly in the right-wing media ecosystem.

That's come as President Donald Trump has suggested that he could quickly move to change his administration's guidelines in dealing with the coronavirus outbreak in hope of returning some people to work in less than three weeks and ending the stock market slide.

No example drew more attention than an interview that Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican, gave Monday night on Fox News, in which he suggested that some elderly Americans - the group most at risk of death from COVID-19 - should be willing to sacrifice their lives so the economy can gain steam.

"No one reached out to me and said, 'As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for its children and grandchildren?' And if that is the exchange, I'm all in," said Patrick, 70.

Meanwhile, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., one of Trump's closest congressional allies, tweeted Monday: "Try running an economy with major hospitals overflowing, doctors and nurses forced to stop treating some because they can't help all, and every moment of gut-wrenching medical chaos being played out in our living rooms, on TV, on social media, and shown all around the world."

"There is no functioning economy unless we control the virus," he added.

For his part, Cuomo did suggest that a strategy in which some elements of the shutdown are loosened - with less vulnerable people returning to work - may be possible in the coming weeks if both the public health and economic approaches are "done intelligently."

No offense, but the “war” analogy is stupid. It’s only used because politicians want to use it to rationalize all kinds of restrictive measures they’re imposing in response to media-driven public hysteria.

That mindset is how you get a “War on Poverty” and a “War on Drugs” that are silly, pathetic losing battles that never end.

They probably know the experts who predicted Hillary had a 90% chance of being President.

Have a nice day,

I consider your reply to me to be stupid.

So there - we both have an opinion.

Something tells me Free Republic is likely to be a casualty of this stupid “war.”

If there is no production, $500.00 will buy you $5.00 worth of stuff.

I noticed the media is twisting what Texas Lt. Govt said.

What he said: “My message is that let’s get back to work,” Patrick, 69, said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” “Let’s get back to living. Let’s be smart about it, and those of us who are 70-plus, we’ll take care of ourselves, but don’t sacrifice the country.”

How the media interprets it: Texas lt governor recommends killing the elderly.

trump is between a rock and a hard place, but there is no other i would want in the lead. return to normalcy, protect those in need of protection, allow for the people to build up antibodies to fight this virus in the future.

the media will moan and lie, people will die... they die all the time from other things as well.

My Mother is not expendable day the people who would euthanize their parents in a heart beat if caring for them became an inconvenience.

There are two types of people, regardless of age, dependent and independent.
Good luck telling independent people to restrict themselves from taking charge of their own lives.

Just your opinion

The nasty, snarky folks on FR started driving off the majority of donors around 2007 during the start of the election wars. Some who didn’t think “correct” were banned and others got worn out over the attacks and stopped coming to the site. Over the years running threads like for Survivor and the Tour de France have died.

Freepathons used to take 2 or 3 weeks - now they drive on into the third month.

The snarky folks are looking to drive off some more donors these days.

It will not be the virus war that kills off FR - it will be the snarky posters driving off more regular folks.

I hear ya. It’s astonishing to see how many FReepers were willing to set the chains upon themselves just because some buffoon like Cuomo, Newsome, Murphy or Pritzker time them it should be done.

The sad part is almost every family has at least one of those people in their families.
They would euthanize grandma or stick her in some home and forget about her.
Never allow those family members ever take care of grandma even for one day!

My Mom’s assisted living facility is likely to stay locked down for a time beyond the opening of business.

Exactly what I would expect President Trump envisions as the country is started back up in a controlled manner.

Democrats do NOT want things to improve before they get $2 trillion in goodies.

Trump needs to stop that bill.

I hear ya. I was one of the survivors of those purges in the mid-2000s. And it turns out I can be an @sshole, too.

:-(

That is what will happen, a slow but steady return.
