Dr. Anthony Fauci's interview with Science magazine began on an inauspicious note. Asked how he's doing right now, Fauci said he was "exhausted" but "good." "I mean, I'm not, to my knowledge, coronavirus-infected," he said, before adding with a laugh: "To my knowledge, I haven't been fired."
What followed were several exchanges that should help people take stock of President Donald Trump's response to the coronavirus. Repeatedly, Fauci tacitly and even openly admitted that comments made by the commander in chief are not true and are not in line with what the nation's leading infectious disease expert is advising.
The interviewer, Jon Cohen, asked whether Fauci would acknowledge that Trump says things he disagrees with, and Fauci seemed to grant the premise. Fauci maintained that, "I don't disagree on the substance" - but then added: "It is expressed in a way that I would not express it, because it could lead to some misunderstanding about what the facts are about a given subject."
The exchange highlights the mixed messages the country has been getting in recent days, in particular, about the promise of certain drugs to treat coronavirus. While Fauci has warned that evidence of the drugs' effectiveness is "anecdotal" and that there is no "magic drug" to treat coronavirus, Trump said Friday that he "disagreed" with Fauci, at least in part, and has repeatedly hailed a malaria drug in particular as a possible "game-changer."
Asked about the White House holding crowded events like a Rose Garden news conference in which Trump was shaking hands with people, Fauci admitted he has repeatedly advised against it. "I keep saying, is there any way we can get a virtual news conference. Thus far, no," Fauci said. "I'm trying my best. I cannot do the impossible."

I have several friends who are on the front lines right now. They are exhausted, and in the middle of a crisis, and they have told me that we will reconnect when they can get their heads above water. In the meantime, they want some occasional sleep. In other words, no time for interviews, or even chats, with lifelong friends.

I wouldn’t fire the guy, I would just take away his airtime. Don’t put him up on that podium. Don’t say anything about it, either. Make it just a normal occurrence/shift change.

I suspect it's more than that. He's been around DC +/- 40 years. I believe they think of themselves as the 'real' government and Presidents as temporary help.

I believe you are correct. Presidents are here for a max of 8 yrs while the swamp people can be around their entire lives.
However the President is the absolute final word when it comes to dealing with individual piss ants like Fauci. Trump can dismiss Fauci and put him in a corner, can Fauci do the same to Trump?

Many, not all high-level federal bureaucrats have mastered the art of kissing ass.
President Trump is stating he's hopeful that the drugs being discussed used in combination will cure those with the China Virus. So far, the limited (emphasis on LIMITED) studies we've seen released give us all some hope. This is what President Trump is hoping for along with the rest of the country.
Dr. Fauci is a scientist. He has said he's hopeful as well, he's also said as a scientist he wants to see the science backed and performed studies which prove the efficacy of the drugs (and here's the important part) without long term unintended effects.
President Trump's and Dr. Fauci's views are *NOT* incompatible with each other. They are in fact complimentary to each other.
The "smirk" some folks are referring to when President Trump says something that Dr. Fauci disagrees with isn't a "smirk" ... it's a reaction to President Trump saying something that may sound perfectly fine to the rest of us as potentially being "misleading" in the Science community.
C'mon folks, haven't we all had an uncontrolled reaction similar to that when someone we're close to or working with has said something that we thought could be misconstrued?
I love my President, and am thankful for his leadership every day. I also like and appreciate Dr. Fauci being at the science head of all this and being a well spoken voice of reason from a science perspective.
Again, President Trump and Dr. Fauci's statements are not incompatible with each other. They come from different and highly important perspectives.
