Coronavirus: China apologises to family of doctor who died after warning about COVID-19

China has exonerated a doctor who was punished for warning about COVID-19 and later died of the disease.

Dr Li Wenliang and seven colleagues were reprimanded in December for telling friends about the emerging coronavirus threat on social media.

In an unusual admission of error, the ruling Communist Party's top disciplinary body has now revoked its earlier decision - and sent a "solemn apology" to Dr Li's family.

Two police officers have been issued with "disciplinary punishments" for their role in the original incident, a report by the National Supervisory Commission said.

Investigators found that Dr Li hadn't disrupted public order with his actions - describing him as a professional who had fought bravely and made sacrifices.

His family have now received a financial contribution to his funeral, as well as workplace injury compensation.

A refund from the bill for the bullet?

This begs the question, when did the CCP last apologise for something like this? I’m no expert in Chinese culture, but IIRC an apology like this is rare from a government to a subordinate, particularly a public one...

Given that Xi was not so long ago putting himself on the same level as Mao, I think this is significant not just in the relation of the CCP to the people of China, but in terms of internal CCP politics.

“In an unusual admission of error, the ruling Communist Party’s top disciplinary body has now revoked its earlier decision...”

The Chinks must believe there’s an upside to this action....either financial or saving face. They do nothing of this nature if it doesn’t provide a reward to themselves.

Please tell me how I indicated any Chinese leader is my “hero”. Mao Tse-Tung, unjustifiably in my opinion, was and is a hero to the Party faithful, that is fact. I take comfort that he is rotting in hell, to be tormented for eternity alongside the likes of Hitler and Stalin..

The Party can’t afford to admit his many errors and spends a great deal of effort covering up his betrayals and incompetence. Mao aside from being a Communist despot a) abandoned his country in the face of a devastating Japanese invasion only half-heartedly fighting Japan, while allowing Japanese to slaughter Chinese civilians. He did so to weaken his rivals and gain power after the war. 2) Mao killed up to 40,000,000 people through sheer economic incompetence during “The Great Leap Forward” in the late 1950’s. He wasn’t even trying to kill them, they were Just collateral damage from idiotic policies. and. 3) the chaos and destruction of the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s.

Xi merely is waging war on all religions in China, imprisioning Muslims, persecuting Christians, and coopting the Catholic Church in China, and as icing on the cake, trying to re-write Scripture to suit the Party. Add to that the incompetent initial response to the Wuhan virus that has now threatened the global economy.

Neither is my hero.

Good points, it works both ways, the Party has ready made scapegoats, and it keeps leaders from bonding to the locals and creating a rival power center. But the reaction to the virus indicates to me that this contributed to the slow virus reaction, they don’t know or trust local experts who realized something very wrong was occurring.

There seems to be an “ignore bad news and hope it goes away” mentality.

It is rare, which indicates just how badly this has impacted national Party credibility. I’m not a Sinologist, but this event has hurt the Party, probably pretty badly, enough to roll the dice on counter-narratives blaming the U.S.

Mr. Trump is the first leader to use tarriffs as a club, not a shield. China’s virus posturing has provided the perfect justification to use that club with a vengeance. Look for a significant scaling back of overall U.S. investment and targeted tariffs to force relocation of critical manufacturing out of China.

Objectively he was a hero, destroyed by a corrupt system.

Actual local bigwigs think long term - their progeny for centuries on end will have to live there. Tourists/ticket-punchers appointed by the emperor as his men on the ground couldn’t possibly care less. They will do as the emperor mandates - their interest is only in securing the emperor’s favor so the next assignment will be better than their current one, with the best assignments being right in the imperial capital. If the locals have to die like flies, so be it. Whereas actual locals think in terms of their kin and friends, many of whose fates have been intertwined for possibly thousands of years on that particular patch of soil.
