Malaria drug sees promising signs as future coronavirus treatment

A drug originally developed to treat malaria is showing signs that it may also cure infections of the coronavirus, though much more testing is needed.

Researchers and virologists in France have completed a clinical trial studying the effects of hydroxychloroquine, used to treat arthritis, malaria, and other ailments, on patients with COVID-19. Researchers treated a total of 26 coronavirus patients with the drug, including six that were given the antibiotic azithromycin, as well.

The researchers released their findings in a study published on Wednesday. The results showed that all six patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin tested negative for the virus after six days. Of the 20 treated with just hydroxychloroquine, 57.1% tested negative for the coronavirus after six days. Just 12.5% of the control group made up of 16 other patients tested negative.

"Despite its small sample size our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is significantly associated with viral load reduction/disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its effect is reinforced by azithromycin," the study said.

Raoult, an infectious disease expert from l’Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire in Marseille, led the research team that conducted the study. Gregory Rigano, an adviser to the Stanford University School of Medicine SPARK Translational Research Program, is leading a program based on Raoult’s results to study the effects of hydroxychloroquine on treating COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Is this the same stuff they gave us in the military in the ‘90s when we went to Somalia? I don’t remember.

Excellent.

Chloroquinine's a malaria drug so there should be plenty of it. Don't know that but guessing.

Although most write ups on Azithromycin say it's for bacteria only and won't work on viruses, here's an article saying it does produce some anti-viral effects.

Azithromycin induces anti-viral effects in cultured bronchial epithelial cells from COPD patients

When John Roberts asked Dr. Birx about hydroxychloroquine in the press conference today, she pooh-poohed it — was very dismissive.

There are several reports of it being extremely beneficial in different stages of WuFlu. It seems that Birx and Fauci aren’t eager to find something that will help. How many months have they been told to run out the clock?

Good. You heard it too. I thought I heard it. I was just glad to hear it start being whispered about.

So I was curious whom makes it and found this...

Hans AndersagChloroquine - Wikipedia Chloroquine was discovered in 1934 by Hans Andersag. It is available as a generic medication. The wholesale cost in the developing world is about US$ 0.04. In the United States, it costs about US$ 5.30 per dose.

Does it cost $5.30 here because there is just no market here? Or does it cost $5.30 because we've been getting screwed over?

***six patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin tested negative for the virus after six days***

Also called Chloroquine. FReepers take note... I think this may well be a key. Cheap and well tested (for malaria.)

When I was in Korea from late 1955 through 1956 and into 1957 we were given those type of pills to prevent malaria.

Sixty days before we came home , we had to stop taking those pills to see if we came down with malaria.- Tom

Main limitation on this very encouraging news is the small study size. MSM says there are plenty of patients available in NYC. If the combo really cures them in 6 days Trump can prove it in the MSM’s front yard within a week. With the Dow’s greatest day in history following hours later. I’d imagine MSM seppuku would follow in more hours, but that would probably be delusions from over-celebration on my part.

were given the antibiotic azithromycin, as well.

I've taken zithro a few times with bronchitis and it quickly cleared it right up. Glad to see that there are some doctors out there with brains. Wish I had a dollar for every quack I've encountered who's told me, "If it's viral, antibiotics won't do you any good." Bulls--t. Yes, it's true that antibiotics don't kill viruses BUT what they can do is prevent a secondary bacterial infection of all the mucus that the virus gunks up your chest with.

Big Pharma is going to try and kill this. They stand to make billions developing a new drug with Uncle Sugar footing the bill.
