Remember the H1N1 Pandemic? I Don’t Either

Although the "racist"-sounding “Wuhan virus” is now labeled as a pandemic by the World Health Organization, in America the real pandemic, more accurately described as pandemonium, is at the local supermarkets where store shelves resemble those in Venezuela.

America is in the grips of a panic the likes of which we haven’t seen before. What exactly is a pandemic, other than a scary sounding word from science fiction movies? According to WHO, “Pandemic refers to an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people.”

Per the Johns Hopkins dashboard, at the time of this writing, there are 147,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus spanning the globe, with 5500 deaths and 72.000 recoveries. Cases in China have leveled off over the past several weeks, suggesting that we in the U.S. may see the same over the upcoming weeks to months.

Wuhan virus is not the first viral pandemic America has had to contend with. The last one was the H1N1 virus from 2009. How did America react to that last pandemic 10 years ago? Does anyone have more than a vague recollection of H1N1, also known as swine flu? No one will forget this current panic, but most have forgotten H1N1.

During the swine flu pandemic, were there mass cancellations of events including conferences, concerts, sporting events, and entire professional sports leagues? Did colleges cancel classes, finishing the remainder of their semesters online? Were travel restrictions imposed between America and Europe? Were panicked Americans hoarding everything from toilet paper to pasta?

If these things happened during the swine flu pandemic, I certainly have no recollection. In 2009, congressional Democrat leaders weren’t criticizing the president, instead they were trying to force through a government takeover of healthcare, known as ObamaCare.

‘Well, the difference is that, this virus is a lot more dangerous. due to the fact that the current president is Trump, and Trump doesn’t care about people, which means that a lot more people will be infected and will die.

IOW, the epidemic/pandemic is defined by who is in the White House. If it had been Hillary, life would’ve continued as normal and the pandemic would not have been declared at all.”

Feel free to prove that point.

A couple of observations.

Trying to figure out how bad this current Wuhan flu is going to be is a bit like trying to figure out everything about the 9-11 attacks in the morning of the attacks.

There is too much new information coming out, and there is no context for it.

So this outbreak could be really really bad, or not so bad.

The fact that the numbers are leveling off in China if true, is a good sign, as is the fact that most of the US is going into warmer weather which causes all respirtory conditions to lessen in intensity.

That being said, we CAN say thing thing is for sure. The press coverage on this is like nothing we’ve seen before, and that includes all prior pandemics.

Will it get as bad as H1N1? I don’t think anyone can say for sure at this point.

I see you were being sarcastic. But, many here believe that. I love to see them prove it.

I would like to add that I think there is a lot of good that can come from this current hoopla over the Wuhan virus, as long as it isn’t too bad.

It is a great dry run for the next pandemic that could be as contagious as the Wuhan virus but as deadly as Ebola. We currently couldn’t easily handle that.

As long as it isn’t too bad, it will be be resolved before the next election. Of course, the media will do every trick in the book to extend it to then.

It will give Trump the motivation to look at ways to get our supply chains the heck out of China. That is extremely important in the long term, and could be the greatest benefit to all this.

You didn't notice the heavy sarcasm all over my post. Hope you're smarter than that.

I'm not. I'm trying to get people to take this seriously so it's over as fast as possible. People who compare this to the flu are being irresponsible and are going to be responsible for making it last longer and be more deadly than it would be otherwise.

The U.S. surgeon general said Monday that the United States is about where Italy was two weeks ago in the coronavirus struggle, a sign that infections are expected to rise.

“We are at a critical inflection point in this country, people,” Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams told Fox News. “When you look at the projections, there’s every chance that we could be Italy.” Yet he said the U.S. has opportunities to mitigate the pandemic.

Two weeks ago, Italy had 1,700 cases of coronavirus and had reported 34 deaths. Now, Italy is reporting an estimated 25,000 cases and more than 1,800 deaths. About 3,800 cases have been reported in the United States and so far, more than 65 people have died from coronavirus. Although the numbers may not be directly comparable, the trajectory is, as Adams sees it.

I remember that viral picture of the kid licking the pig’s nose and the caption, “You little Bas***d! You’ve killed us all!”

But I didn’t follow it until it was no longer a thing.

It’s why I don’t take this virus seriousl, but I think the response puts us all at risk.

“That was a flu. This is more akin to a highly contagious viral pneumonia.”

Do you try and say things to show your ignorance.

H1N1 was a highly contagious viral pneumonia. It wasn’t “akin” to it, it was it.

Forget it. They want the panic. They want to see violence on the streets.

They shut the interstate commerce down and people cant get supplies? That is what we will see. The east coast states are already hinting that way.
