Remember the H1N1 Pandemic? I Don’t Either

Although the "racist"-sounding “Wuhan virus” is now labeled as a pandemic by the World Health Organization, in America the real pandemic, more accurately described as pandemonium, is at the local supermarkets where store shelves resemble those in Venezuela.

America is in the grips of a panic the likes of which we haven’t seen before. What exactly is a pandemic, other than a scary sounding word from science fiction movies? According to WHO, “Pandemic refers to an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people.”

Per the Johns Hopkins dashboard, at the time of this writing, there are 147,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus spanning the globe, with 5500 deaths and 72.000 recoveries. Cases in China have leveled off over the past several weeks, suggesting that we in the U.S. may see the same over the upcoming weeks to months.

Wuhan virus is not the first viral pandemic America has had to contend with. The last one was the H1N1 virus from 2009. How did America react to that last pandemic 10 years ago? Does anyone have more than a vague recollection of H1N1, also known as swine flu? No one will forget this current panic, but most have forgotten H1N1.

During the swine flu pandemic, were there mass cancellations of events including conferences, concerts, sporting events, and entire professional sports leagues? Did colleges cancel classes, finishing the remainder of their semesters online? Were travel restrictions imposed between America and Europe? Were panicked Americans hoarding everything from toilet paper to pasta?

If these things happened during the swine flu pandemic, I certainly have no recollection. In 2009, congressional Democrat leaders weren’t criticizing the president, instead they were trying to force through a government takeover of healthcare, known as ObamaCare.

I remember it as well because my then 5yr old had it and got permanent lung damage to his lower left lobe. He has had pneumonia four times since them so I am concerned about Covid. I get the point to though. This just seems to strike certain populations harder and differently than the swine flu did. I don’t know what to think so being more cautious seems like the best thing to do.

what do you think the flu is? oh wait. It is highly contagious viral respiratory illness that can manifest as pneumonia. Same as corona virus.

Because they couldn’t use it to take down Trump.

same here- My MIL never recovered from COPD which developed as a complication from infection in early 2010. The assisted living residence she was in had a nearly identical situation as what happened in Seattle area. However, being Dear Leader’s home state and all....move along people....

The H1N1 virus is still with us as part of the regular flu. Actually it is the largest strain reported at 50-60%. Since annual flu deaths are not yet known, even for the 2009-2010 outbreak, H1N1 probably kills the same number it did then. The CDC doesn’t report exact numbers; only ranges. The death toll for the “swine flu” was 8800 to 18,880 deaths.

To me the only number to watch is the death rate. How many actually contract the virus is unknowable. Getting scared and projecting from Chinese or Italian experience is a waste of time. Look at the Swiss. They have a high infection rate and low death rate. We’re more like the swiss than we are like the Chinese or Italians in terms of resources and age profile.

Yes. I was working at a hospital watching the massive effort to deploy the already existing vaccine.

It's less contagious than Corona. Corona targets the lower respiratory system and the flu targets the upper. The flu only manifests as pneumonia if it moves down into the lower tract and then it opens it to bacterial pneumonia. Not the same at all.

Bad comparison. Switzerland is much smaller geographically AND they've instituted tougher measures nationwide than we have in order to flatten the curve and avoid the breakdown of their healthcare system.

where did you go to medical school? you are wrong on so many fronts
Corona is an upper respiratory infection that can cause viral pneumonia in some people. The flu is an upper respiratory infection that can cause viral pneumonia in some individuals. Both are quite contagious. The flu leaves some infected individuals open to secondary bacterial pneumonia. I havent seen that corona virus does that but would not be surprised if it did. But by all means panic and spread your misinformation. Why bother with facts when one can be dramatic instead?

That's wrong.

https://newsus.cgtn.com/news/2020-02-20/How-exactly-does-COVID-19-kill-people--Oe9XUpoYWQ/index.html

"Lungs are the organs most affected by COVID-19 because the virus accesses host cells via the enzyme ACE2, which is most abundant in the type II alveolar cells of the lungs. "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus_disease_2019

"Once inside the body, it begins infecting epithelial cells in the lining of the lung. A protein on the receptors of the virus can attach to a host cell's receptors and penetrate the cell. Inside the host cell, the virus begins to replicate until it kills the cell. "

https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/2020/03/13/what-coronavirus-does-body-covid-19-infection-process-symptoms/5009057002/

I could go on posting references all day long. You're just flat out wrong.

"The major difference between coronaviruses that cause a cold and those that cause a severe illness is that the former primarily infect the upper respiratory tract (the nose and throat), whereas the latter thrive in the lower respiratory tract (the lungs) and can lead to pneumonia. The SARS virus binds to a receptor called ACE2, and MERS binds to one called DPP4—both are found in lung cells, among other places"

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-coronaviruses-cause-infection-from-colds-to-deadly-pneumonia1/

Covid 19 IS a SARS corona. Why are you out there deliberately covering this up and comparing it the flu?

The corona virus enters through the upper respiratory system same as all corona viruses.
