The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Sunday that people throughout the U.S. should avoid events of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks.
The announcement comes as some major cities have already banned large events and ordered bars and restaurants to close.
The CDC said in its release that it "recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States."
"Events of any size should only be continued if they can be carried out with adherence to guidelines for protecting vulnerable populations, hand hygiene, and social distancing. When feasible, organizers could modify events to be virtual," the CDC said.
The guidance would mean no public events through early May. The CDC noted that its guidance "is not intended to supersede the advice of local public health officials" and "does not apply to the day to day operation of organizations such as schools, institutes of higher learning, or businesses."
The new guidance emphasizes the importance health officials have put on "social distancing," a strategy to slow the spread of the coronavirus to keep from overwhelming the country's health care system. It has also taken on the catch phrase "flatten the curve."

That will save everybody... And quell any pesky protesters to this nonsense.
Easter Services? hmmm.
So ... this means Joe Biden can still have his normal rallies, right?
Let me be the first to congratulate Saudi Arabia on getting this year’s Wrestlemania.
How about this idea... 50 people in a square column, side by side with 2 other groups of 50 people in a square column and about 50 columns in that formation heading towards a statehouse to oust the governor and his minions.... It that acceptable?
Why May? It’s not that I disagree, but I have some questions. Or perhaps I want to manage my expectations.
Can a person be exposed, get the covid-19 and not get sick?
Or does everyone exposed get sick but in varying degrees?
Once you are exposed, get sick (or not), does the virus remain in your system or has your immune system annihilated the virus making you immune at that point?
Or is this a repetitious cycle that wears down your systemic response?
I’ve been wondering the same.
That will essentially shut down the entire country. How many commercial air flights have only 50 people on them? Or buses and trains? Are grocery stores going to have security guards standing out front ensuring that there are no more than 50 people inside at a time? What about working in a building with more than 50 people? The list is endless, so unless you live 8n tiny rural town, everything will need to shutdown.
Can a person be exposed, get the covid-19 and not get sick?
Yes. Just like any flu virus. But just like any virus, if youre tired, already have health problems, etc, youre more susceptible to the virus getting a foothold.
Wonder if the government has stockpiled megaphones to yell at us in the streets.
Now it’s MAY? Huh. So they say it’s best to not congregate with more than 50 people and even then keep distance. What about those of us who go to busy workplaces every day with fixed workstations that are within 4 feet of each other with one segment of co-workers who travel to various states and then coming into the office? Nothing to be done about it I suppose. Just deal with the anxiety.
Biz is exempt.
Suggestion for employers, large and small, however: Ask your employees to take their temp before coming into work. If an employee is running a fever, have a protocol in place to handle that.
Pesky First Amendment...
Swine Flu 2009-2010, 60 million Americans infected, 333,000 Americans hospitalized, 14,000 Americans dead. Obama President no problem.
Now there are a few thousand Americans diagnosed, with less than 75 dead, mostly older folks in poor health. Trump the President, massive hysteria, everything shut down, shortages, stock market collapsing. Media blaming Trump. This is a bunch of crap to remove Trump, the media will go to any lengths to take him down. Keep an eye on suicide rate, mental illness, crime, and drunkenness all will spike.
It’s a bad case of the sniffles people.
Well, they are having trouble keeping up with all the dead bodies piling up.
Who doesn’t know someone personally who has died from Coronavirus?
