I have posted an excerpt because I am not sure about copyright policy on the part of American Scholar. The author is a credentialed infectious disease epidemiologist and professor of public health CCNY. It really is a must read article.

It’s an article that sounds reasonable and thoughtful with regard to the virus itself. But not necessarily with regard to political considerations.

The author’s response to Trump and to current political themes has a distinct flavor of leftism, including repetitive use of the word “xenophobia,” which he seems to use in the same, clichéd, accusatory manner, blindly accepting media narratives.

If what the author is saying is accurate, then why would our hospitals be overrun? People keep saying that will happen like it’s a foregone conclusion.

Another flaw in this author’s commentary is his apparent inability to recognize the immense and exquisite political balancing act President Trump is forced to perform in his response to this virus problem.

Forced, simply because of the infantile and ruthless disposition of the media and the democrats in their desire to harm him.

I’m honestly more worried about home invasions than Captain Trips at this point thanks to the enemedia sending people into full panic mode.

I was buying this guy's cr*p until I hit THIS sentence:

"In the past, the Trump administration in the US, Putin in Russia, the Xi administration in China, and their many imitators had been decisive and ruthless in locking up their undesirables and in delivering policies that appeal to hypernationalist rhetoric."

I don't recall the Trump administration "locking up undesirables and in delivering policies that appeal to hypernationalist rhetoric". Putin and Xi, absolutely.

The few illegal border gate-crashers that Trump has incarcerated are minuscule by comparison.

The last paragraph: "The new virus, in its own time, will become less virulent. Sooner or later it will disappear from the news. Whether it will have moved people to retreat into even more craven angst about the wide world’s dangers, whether we will cede even more control to the powerful, or whether we will collectively move away from fears that make us subservient and move, or inch, toward a more interconnectedly humane world—this, as far as I can tell, remains up to us"

The first two sentences are fine. He should have ended it there instead of his pile of fake humanistic mush.

Good read - I have a supplement:

Kind of ironic - we know that the Deep State and others use fear as a way to steer and control the people - we had the commie/nuke war threat until the Berlin Wall came down then it wasn’t viable anymore and up pops Globull Warming, which has many in fear that we’re gonna destroy the Earth even as we do less harm than past generations and none of the data actually supports anything but the earth’s climate and Mother Nature do not now, and never did have a “balance” and even if they did, we have no idea of how to maintain one or ‘fix’ things...all our efforts end up causing more harm....the coronavirus scare is no different - the panic-induced knee-jerking will cause more harm than the virus.
Folks who would be up in arms if the government decided to tell them they could not move freely are now begging that same government to lock them, and everyone else, down....I’d wager if, after doing that, the story ‘evolved” they would also go meekly to barb-wire surrounded camps/tent cities because the “latest info” said that’s the only way to stop it.
Even though we know that they use fear to guide and control us, so many can’t see it through the red haze of insane panic....they not only welcome the government controls, they beg for them...

And the fear mongers will try to leverage it...

Reminds me of a saying, by Ben Franklin, that many FReepers, who are now acting insane, used to showcase:

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
