The panic is less about the bug than...
1) Italy has an aged population.
2) Italy has a shambolic healthcare system.
3) Italy’s bloody broke.

If you look across Japan, France, Spain and Germany....there’s been infections and some limited deaths. The Italian situation relates to South Korea, in the spread and the death rate.
I would suggest that lung issues (years of smoking, asthma sufferers, and local air quality) might play into the higher death rate. One thing that the Italians haven’t told....is the age and general health of those who were infected and died. The Germans had their first two deaths yesterday....one described as a elderly woman who was already in frail condition (80s), and the second was a older guy who had a heart condition and diabetes.
On the rate of infection....one is left to wonder about hygiene habits and sanitation quality of Italy.

What I read in the first reports about Italy was that there is a large Chinese community in northern Italy. This of course begs the question on its specific connections to China and possibly Iran.
While you did not ask about Iran, it feeds speculation that the Iranians were working with the Chinese on a COVID bio weapon. It was reported that some special aide to high level Iranian government succumbed to COVID.
