As countries around the world grapple with the coronavirus, Taiwan may offer valuable lessons on how to curb its spread.
Just 81 miles away, the island is a short flight to mainland China, where COVID-19 is believed to have originated in the city of Wuhan. As the outbreak took hold in January, many Taiwanese business people and their families based in China were returning to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and up to 2,000 Chinese tourists a day visited the island, potentially bringing the virus with them.
And yet, Taiwan has had only 47 cases of COVID-19 and one death as of Tuesday far fewer than Chinas 80,754 cases and 3,136 deaths, a stark contrast even when taking into account the enormous population difference: Taiwans 23 million to Chinas 1.4 billion.
Of the 100-plus countries and territories affected, Taiwan has the lowest incidence rate per capita around 1 in every 500,000 people for a place that is located so close to China and with so much travel to and from.
What lessons can Taiwan teach the world so other countries can stem the spread of the virus?
Be alert and proactive
Partly because its near China and speaks the same language, Taiwan learned early that a severe pneumonia was spreading in Wuhan.
Set up a command center
Equally important, Taiwan's CDC activated the Central Epidemic Command Center relatively early on Jan. 20 and that allowed it to quickly roll out a series of epidemic control measures.
Take quick and decisive action
Taiwan also took tough action early. On Jan. 26, five days after it confirmed its first case, Taiwan banned arrivals from Wuhan, earlier than any other country.
Use technology to detect and track cases
After securing its borders, Taiwan used technology to fight the virus.

Be in a warm, humid climate- not listed.
This ought to be brought up more....just hasn’t been that many cases in the southern hemisphere, which is in summer and entering fall at this point.
I also think rate of smoking plays into this as well.
The two German deaths reported yesterday (first deaths over the virus in the country) have certain characteristics. The woman was in her late 80s and described as in frail condition to start with. The guy was described as in his 70s with diabetes and a heart condition.
Taiwan had a BIG PROBLEM at the beginning. They were being blocked from the WHO by China.
So, Taiwan had to think in terms of worst case, and acted accordingly. For example, at the beginning of the outbreak, China told the WHO that person-to-person transmission was not possible, so the WHO told the world. Taiwan probably heard the same (they do have Internet), but probably had questions, which were blocked. Same for aerosol transmission. In both cases, of course, China did come around, eventually - but often too late for other countries.
So Taiwan was forced to ‘play it safe’, and they did.
It also helped that their priority was fighting the virus, rather than protecting their economy - since if you don’t win the fight against the virus, the economy loses, regardless of how many times you try cutting interest rates.
It is probably the same climate as much of China.
Actually this time of the year, it is not very warm or humid in Taiwan.
Taiwanese people know not to believe the PRC government and, they are able to watch and understand the cellphone videos regarding the COVID-19 pandemic that have been leaking out of mainland China.
The videos of an apparently abandoned Beijing and stories of running out of body bags and crematoria running 24 hrs a day are particularly disturbing.
That’s probably greatly aided their program of putting people under quarantine.
Coronavirus? We were trying to fight a much deadlier disease - Trumpism. We were consumed with Nancy, Chucky and Shifty’s impeachment.
Taiwan has not been trusting the Chicoms since Chang Kai Shek. Meanwhile we sold out to them and are paying the high price of a totally corrupt political system in DC.
It is virtually identical to WuHan.
The problem in China was, the virus ORIGINATED there.
They however, appear to have turned the corner toward containing the Virus there.
Korea also, seems to have turned the corner.
Taiwan, AND the mainland, both seem to have the right idea.
The big story is that NBC said Taiwan secured their borders, and didnt scream, RACISSS!!
Ah...read my mind. The libs couldn’t overthrow Trump using the Russian thing (and they’re already beating that dead horse once more), Stormy Daniels? Nope. Impeachment, not even. So...we will show how he doesn’t deal well with the newest plague to infect the weakest/least healthy of the population~! Hey, if that doesn’t do it, they’ll just come up with something else. Maybe Trump will cause an alien invasion next...
Gosh, I’m not done yet.... Yes, it’s a dangerous disease/illness. But the hysteria is uncalled for. CORRECT ACTIONS are. Millions flocking to the grocery store can only increase the risk. Heck, I did stock up last night. Filled up my wine rack, bought some Bok Choy and goat cheese. The world is good! :)
What the people don’t see. While the media hypes up CIVID-19, the democrats are switching the players around on the chess board.
The Dems already did that one, and that is part of how we got that hateful Orange orangutan in the oval office in the first place. Did I mention he's a racist.
Yep, Democrats and Chinese Communist Party have many commonalities: centralized economy, disregard of property rights, blatant ubiquitous propaganda, etc.
Better control in Taiwan and Singapore may be more a result of social/economic/legal factors than mere temperature.
