Iran releases about 70,000 prisoners because of coronavirus: judiciary chief

DUBAI - Iran has released approximately 70,000 prisoners because of the coronavirus outbreak in the country, Iranian judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi said on Monday, according to Mizan, the news site of the judiciary.

“The release of the prisoners, to the point where it doesn’t create insecurity in society ... will continue,” he said.

Raisi did not specify if or when those released would need to return.

About two years ago, someone did a survey and figured the prison population of Iran to be around 250,000. So if they did release the 70-odd thousand, then that’s about 35-percent.

Or if you used Brian Williams/Mara Gay math.....103 percent of the population of the prisons.

What kind of prisoners are we talking about here? The ones who were arrested for “thinking against the government”? Drug dealers? Bacon smugglers? (No, that’s not a euphemism.) Rape victims who were jailed so their families wouldn’t commit an honor killing? Men who committed “honor killings”?

Given some of the things that people can be imprisoned for over there, there’s no way to know what kinds of people were released.
