An infectious diseases expert at the forefront of the search for a coronavirus vaccine said on Friday that it was the most frightening disease hes ever encountered, and that war is an appropriate analogy for what the country is facing, as 50 70 percent of the global population may become infected.
Hatchett, who sat on the White House Homeland Security Council in 2005 2006 and was a principal author of the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza Implementation Plan, and currently heads the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, told the UKs Channel 4:
This is the most frightening disease Ive ever encountered in my career, and that includes Ebola, it includes MERS, it includes SARS. And its frightening because of the combination of infectiousness and a lethality that appears to be manyfold higher than flu.
He feels this way because of the combination of infectiousness, and a lethality that appears to be many-fold higher than the flu.
When asked what concerns him the most about coronavirus, Hatchett said:
I think the most concerning thing about this virus is the combination of infectiousness and the ability to cause severe disease or death. And we have not since 1918, the Spanish Flu, seen a virus that combined those two qualities in the same way. We have seen very lethal viruses. We have seen certainly, Ebola, or Nipah, or any of the other diseases that CEPI, the organisation that I run, works on but those viruses had high mortality rates I mean, Ebolas mortality rate in some settings is greater than 80%. But they dont have the infectiousness that this does. They dont have the potential to explode and spread globally.
Hatchett added I dont think it is a crazy analogy to compare this to World War II.

Seeing how he worked in the Bush and Obama administrations, I would see he is personally acquainted with more than one.
“It had a head start.”
Not a sufficient cause for the difference.
One more correct answer might be that we have become blase about the flu, in spite of the fact that it kills tens of thousands in the U.S. every year. If a flu infection was handled as everyone is being asked to consider a corona virus infection, the infection rate and death rate from the common flu might be no larger than they are now for the corona virus.
Just a reminder: By comparison, influenza known as the common flu has infected as many as 45 million Americans since October and killed as many as 46,000, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It's gonna be hard to dismiss this guy as 'a kook'...
Our best hope is the Chinese aren't competent at building bio-weapons and that this attempt might fizzle out...
For me - this is three strikes and they're out... poison dog food, toxic drywall, and now this. Let's manufacture our own stuff... and if we buy from others, let's buy from friends...not people who have tried to kill us...
Well guess again, I’m not afraid. I have been leaving my home for the past several days without a mask or gloves. I refuse to live in fear. Having said that, sheesh you sound like a gem.
1918 came in several waves, the second wave was the worst. We’re still in the first wave.
He is one.
Trump should stop downplaying this and sending out tweets calling people “snakes.” This can get very serious and Trump suggesting over and over again that he got this under control from the get go is just plain stupid. I’m a supporter of Trump and all of his policies, but he’s just not handling this right—or at least his public statements about it aren’t right.
Grow up Mr. President. Drop the dumb tweets and focus on the job. Lots of people may get sick in the next months. It’s nothing to minimize.
Human nature.
Normalcy bias.
And they will be the FIRST to demand to be rescued and helped.
Amen X 1,000.
The USA is not even in the first wave yet. More the first splash of the oncoming tsunami.
It had a head start.

IMHO, you are dead wrong, and the difference between China, Italy, Seattle and your town is just a question of weeks.
In April 2017, Dr Richard J. Hatchett, former director of the U.S Government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), became the full-time CEO.[7] Hatchett was also a member of the United States Homeland Security Council under George W. Bush, and the United States National Security Council, under Barack Obama.[8][9]

A bit of a conflict of interest. The more this is seen as a huge danger, the more his organization brings in.
Hatchet has been a bio-weapon guy his whole career, bringing in money to develop countermeasures for anthrax, smallpox, plague, tularemia and other potential threats. He greatly skewed funding toward developing treatments, vaccines etc...for these biological things at the expense of funds for radiological and chemical countermeasures.
I can’t remember them all, but common bleach is most commonly used. 1 part bleach to 32 parts water, spray, let it sit for at least five minutes. In your kitchen, wipe it off then. On the street, let it evaporate.
So, it's all about YOU. How wonderful...
How do you know you never had an asymptomatic case of flu, passed it to several others, and they passed it to still others, and a couple people down the line died who otherwise would be alive?
I don't think God tells us these things, but he does tell us to love our neighbors. I'm no "germophobe, but taking reasonable precautions to slow down diseases would seem to me to be part of being a loving "neighbor". It is a lot easier than laying down one's life for his brother.
Now, the world is NOT ending. But, we ARE going to lose some people "early", due to COVID-19, and just the economic effects already incurred (supply chain disruptions, etc.) will ripple down and may kill more people than the virus. Certainly many people will suffer hardships.
MY God says be alert to threats bad for my body (temple) AND my soul, and ditto for others.
Not if you don't catch it.
They reason they haven’t said a wors is they can’t figure out how to blame Trump for a yearly occurance. I guess the mass hysteria caused by something new in an election year can’t be wasted.
That's a pretty big number...
Yuge?
Maybe we should call this the "Logan's Run" virus...
