The ‘Million Dollars Per Person’ Affair Is Telling
National Review ^ | Charles C Cooke

Posted on 03/07/2020 2:40:53 AM PST by RoosterRedux

Obviously, the math here is spectacularly off. If Michael Bloomberg had divided the money he spent on his presidential run evenly among Americans, we would each have got $1.53, not $1 million. For Bloomberg to give $1 million to each American, he would have to be worth $327 trillion (in cash), which, for context, is around 17 times American GDP and about five-and-a-half thousand times what he’s actually worth. The scale of the error here is galactic.

It’s also extremely telling. This, right here, is why so many left-leaning Americans think that “the billionaires” can pay for everything. It’s why Elizabeth Warren was enthusiastically boosted by the media despite her ridiculous pretense that she could pay for a series of gargantuan initiatives without raising taxes on anyone but the extremely rich. It’s why Democrat after Democrat promises not to raise “middle class taxes” while promising programs that require the raising of middle class taxes. How did this bad tweet make it onto TV to be endorsed? Why did Mara Gay agree with it? Why didn’t Brian Williams notice? Because the people involved in this clip thought it was true. This is how they see the world. 65

But it’s not true. Not even close. Forget the million for a moment and make it Andrew Yang’s thousand instead. Would that be possible? Nope! If Michael Bloomberg were to try to achieve what Andrew Yang promised ($1,000 per American per month, forever), he would be able to give every American about $183 in the first month before he’d have $0 left. To make it through a single month, he would have to be five times richer than he is. And, after that single month, even at five times his current wealth, his fortune would be completely and permanently depleted.

this is just one more example that no matter how many times leftists (i.e. democrats) tell you how smart they are, they really are dumb.

It is the Dunning-Kruger effect in spades, folks.

Here's a great comment from source:
In the ridiculous ‘The Millionaire’ TV series (1955 - 1960), John Beresford Tipton, a multi-millionaire, had his assistant, Michael Anthony, give people he didn’t know a check for a million dollars. Instead of wasting all that money on his pointless campaign, Michael Bloomberg could have actually done this and followed up with stories about what the more foolish recipients did with their money. It could have been an amusing reality TV show.

Alternatively, with 500 million dollars, Bloomberg could have given 5,000 worthy individuals 100,000 dollars to start businesses. Or, he could have given the money to worthwhile charities.

Unfortunately, Bloomberg has a small mind.

How dare he say that Bloomberg has a small mind. Everyone knows (even if they refuse to admit it) that Big Gulp sodas are at the heart of all NYC's problems.

Outlaw Big Gulp's and voila...all problems solved.

Think of all America's problems that could have been solved by such a forward thinking genius.

Many people think that a Billion is TWO Million just as a Bicycle has TWO wheels. It’s too bad that we do not call one billion as one thousand million. It is easier to realize just how huge the number billion is when thought of as one thousand million.

An old friend of mine (a Yalie no less) used to say people in general, "if you're so smart, why ain't you rich?" (he wasn't and was always greatly frustrated by that fact, so he might have been unwittingly addressing that comment to himself).

That question might be amended slightly to make it more accurate..."if you're so smart, why aren't you effective at achieving your goals."

Why isn’t Bernie railing about the Billionaires and
Trillionaires?

And to complicate things even further, in many Spanish, French and Portuguese speaking nations, (and a hundred years ago, in many many more nations), A Billion meant a Million Million... What we now call a Trillion.

I am certainly dating myself when I find analogs of this in the past coverage by the biased media. How dare President Ford stumble on that airway stair? VP Dan Quayle’s mishap with ‘potatoe’ from a spelling card handed him by the class teacher. President Bush ‘41 raked over the sarcastic coals for being amazed at a high-tech scanner.

Whom the high nabobs of the media scorn, all is fair game, no matter how illogical or fallacious. They have no time nor any DESIRE to validate that which besmirches their victims. When the attack gets exposed as being ‘over the top’, exemplified by Dan Rather and his Texas ANG papers, the perps get thrown under the bus while the rest search for cover-up news. Move-On anyone?

Thus PDJT’s prolific use of tweets that are difficult to be distorted by the LEFTist MSM. Imagine that ability back in President Reagan’s day with his superb ability at quips!

I do not believe Williams graduated High School. This is a classic example of how public school education has devolved. I knew instantly that this was a huge math error upon hearing the statement. I was taken aback by the obvious stupidity of both people.

Mini Mikey would have to have 327 quadrillion. Not trillion.$327,000,000,000,000.00. Even the National Review can’t get it right. Basic math. Geesh. And I do know about exponents.

That was in interesting read. My favorite line:

“their incompetence robs them of the mental ability to realize just how inept they are.”

In my life’s experiences I have found numerous people that are very arrogant and at at the same time exceedingly ignorant. Probably the Dunning-Kruger effect explains it.

Politically speaking, AOC would be a poster child for this. John Kerry would fit too.

The network had a graphic ready for the presentation, so they had plenty of time to catch the error.

It’s also extremely telling. This, right here, is why so many left-leaning Americans think that “the billionaires” can pay for everything.

The ignorance is startling, but it's this specific aspect that jumps out at me.

Bernie wants to spend $60T on health care? They think that money is just laying around. They just need to reach into the pockets of billionaires and pull out some of that money. It's easy.

They really have no idea that their Utopian solutions are impossibly far out of reach.

This is really a super-embarrassing moment for the mainstream media.

They have been exposed as utterly stupid lightweights.

Why does anybody pay attention to them anymore?

I believe 327 million X 1 million is 327 trillion. 10 to the 12th power is one trillion.
