Harsh measures horrify civil libertarians, but they often save lives, especially when they are imposed in the early days.
The best-known modern example is Cubas AIDS epidemic. In the 1980s, Cuba and the United States were both hit hard by the AIDS epidemic. In Cuba, the virus first infected thousands of soldiers, doctors and nurses who had served in Africa.
The Castro regimes response roundly condemned by other countries was to make H.I.V. tests mandatory, and to force everyone infected into quarantine camps. The camps were not hellholes: they had bungalows, gardens, theater troupes, medical care, more food than people outside often had, and less homophobia than gay men often faced in macho rural Cuba. But no one could leave, except for brief family visits with an escort whose main job was to make sure that no sex took place.
Meanwhile, the United States took a pro-legal-rights approach. Even offering an H.I.V. test was made illegal without a separate counseling session, which scared many away from testing. Although gay bathhouses were epicenters of transmission, there were long divisive fights over closing them.
After triple therapy was developed in the mid-1990s, most Cuban camps closed.
But the difference in lives saved by choosing brutality over freedom was stark: Cubas H.I.V. infection rate was for decades about one-sixth that of the American one. New York City and Cuba have roughly the same population. In the epidemics first 30 years, fewer than 2,500 Cubans died of AIDS. Over 78,000 New Yorkers mostly gay men did.
As the virus creeps closer, stark choices will arise. The United States cannot shut out the whole world. Even if all air travel were stopped, the virus could reach Latin America or Canada and enter over our land borders.

The Norks executed one of their guys that left the quarantine.
OTOH, we need to be realistic.
We live in a modern, enlightened age and must be appreciative and sensitive toward the concerns of all oppressed and downtrodden of our fellow citizens who primarily reside in urban concentrations.
Think of these cities as giant petri dishes. If there is a pandemic the deaths are likely to be concentrated there.
Think ‘silver-lining’.
Okay, lets close all the tunnels and bridges going into NYC and ban flights from JFK and La Guardia.
Millions of lives could have been saved with HIV Quarantine.
My God! The Rats want to close our borders now? These people have been bitching about the Orange Meanie for years and now a new cold arises in China and they want to slam the borders down? One thing you have to admire about Rats. They arent afflicted with principles.
The President stands no chance here. The dems will try to nail him no matter what he does. If he HAD shut down schools or shut down airports they would have been critical of that. Since he is playing it with caution, they nail him on that. He just can’t win with them. We have had flu throughout all time and no president ever took the hit for it. WTF?
Keep your head on man and stop this depressive nonsense. The President hasn't stood a chance since he came down the elevator, yet here he is and here we are. The enemy isn't the democrats. It's the RINOs and weaklings in our own trenches.
Just stand firm and the dems can't do anything much unless someone makes a terrible mistake. Panicking about this serves no use whatsoever.
Were there any related deaths from blood supply contaminations—a preventive shame?
Re: 9 - thanks for posting some reality.
The best way to end the corona virus crisis would be to exterminate the presstitutes at the New York times
By calling a news conference and presenting all the great minds to whom President Trump delegated various tasks, the press narrative was clearly shown to be hype on a grand scale,
And a lot of gerbils,too.
Including delegating public affairs on this to Pence who is much better at communicating calmly and staying on point.
.
After the Coming to America King Obama presidency, the concept of delegation by a well seasoned CEO is beyond the comprehension of any Democrat
“The dems will try to nail him no matter what he does. “
Yeah this is the New York Times. So what they’re saying may be true. But I guarantee you that if he were to take their advice... If he were to do anything that even appears like what they’re suggesting... If he were to take the bait, they would immediately denounce him as a horrendous hitlerian tyrant.
Yeah we know how this game is played.
My grand plan was 10 000 tents with fresh water flown in on Midway Island.
Now it’s too late.
But you know, I would at least consider that the brutal Wuhan ring quarantine worked and file that for future use. We may need it.
LOL! Perhaps a more practical solution would be to quarantine them for, say, a period of several years at some appropriate facility. It could solve a whole host of problems.
