Party registration is fairly meaningless. Republicans in some Democrat-dominated cities, like D.C. or NYC, register as Democrats so they can vote in Democrat primaries. Also, some states, like Texas, have no party registration.

The Gallup party-identification survey showed self-identified Republicans outnumbering Democrats recently. Independents have often outnumbered both parties.

Perhaps in the South, is registration meaningless, but it still is symbolic of where sympathies lie.

You state registration is meaningless in DC: 95% of the vote is for the democrats in that city and the city is less than 50% black. In NYC, the dems take 80% or more of the vote, so in these two cities, registration by party is significantly meaningful.
