The coronavirus could be up to 1,000 times more infectious than SARS because it plagues the body in the same way as HIV and Ebola, scientists warn.

Experts initially presumed the spread of COVID-19 would follow the same trajectory as the SARS outbreak in 2002/3, because the viruses are almost identical genetically.

And to add to your post, bird and swine flu were going to kill us all.

I think people are just filled with a general non-specific anxiety due to a 24 hour non stop news cycle filled with bad news and partisan bickering and a strange new infection gives us an outlet for that anxiety.

Every new illness that hits the news generates panic stricken posts on here. So far none of them have proven as deadly as predicted.

They will use Chinese numbers to ‘prove’ a high death rate then attack you when you attempt to use the very same numbers they cite.

There are two conflicting claims by the corona-doomers. One is they say believe the China case numbers because the it means the mortality is high. Second they say don't believe the Chinese mortality numbers because it makes the mortality higher.

Another trick is to use mortality versus recovery. Recovery is rising much more rapidly than mortality so that ratio has dropped from over 100% to 10% and is still dropping. They will be into a new argument long before it reaches 2 or 3%.

Of course we should believe nothing from China. But the rates outside of China are low except in poorly monitored areas like Iran where the cases are not being discovered. My view is 2% is serious and we need to stop the spread as quickly as possible regardless of how fast it spreads.

“Hence it is not likely that there will be a general outbreak in the United States”

There are nearly four million Asians just in California so I’m not so sure about your take on this.

Everything they could do might not be much in Iran.

or not ...

not one spec of evidence to support that “1,000 times more infectious than SARS” ...

FReepers doing what they do best: ignorantly trying to spread fear, uncertainty, doubt and panic ...

There is definitely something more to that ‘could be community virus’ story. The ‘could have had contact with
...’ addeddum belied a certain specificity.

Don’t want to stick my head into your fight...but 7% —or even 2% is still millions dead.

Let’s be cautious about tossing numbers around without ANY decent information.

And, in the US we might want to consider doing more than 2 tests a day.

Don’t trust any headline that includes the words, “Could be”, “might”, “may”.

All the smart people are panicking.

I don’t think so.

The media is hyping this like I’ve never seen.

Places with high concentrations of Asians in the US are subject to outbreaks. Efforts should be concentrated in those areas. The fact is that culturally Chinese are very secretive about illness and generally don’t discuss it. They fear judgement on their families and communities.

In Manhattan’s Chinatown the economy which depends on tourists eating in restaurants and shopping is hurting badly. In Chinatown much of the real governance is done by the tongs and gangs. It does no good for the bosses if an outbreak were to occur and be publicized. It is not beyond their power and self interest to put the word out that people who develop flu like symptoms are not to go to medical centers where they may be diagnosed. The publicity would kill any remaining business. Strongly suspect there have been non diagnosed COVID 19 cases within Chinatown. There simply was too much travel from the Wusan epicenter from Dec 15-Jan 23 to multiple points in the US. The virus is here and genetically susceptible people are at risk and probably have been infected.

Thank God for that. But why is the global response to this virus unprecedented as far as quarantines go? Virtually every country where it is widespread has instituted draconian measures such as travel bans, locking down cities, aggressive case tracking, mass quarantines....why is that?

A *CHINESE* source — backed up by the French — confirm the significance of, though not the origin of, those amino acid sequences the Indian researchers talked about.

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3052495/coronavirus-far-more-likely-sars-bond-human-cells-scientists-say

When looking at the genome sequence of the new coronavirus, Professor Ruan Jishou and his team at Nankai University in Tianjin found a section of mutated genes that did not exist in Sars, but were similar to those found in HIV and Ebola.

Instead of hooking up to the ACE2 receptor, the novel coronavirus has a cleavage site on the spike. This tricks something called the furin enzyme, on human cells, to cleave the spike at that point — allowing the viral membrane and the human cell’s membrane to join, effectuating the entry of the virus into the cell.

Guess which viruses actively have their own Furin? Ebola and AIDS.

Guess which viruses DON’T have anything like this?

“The mutation could not be found in Sars, Mers or Bat-CoVRaTG13, a bat coronavirus that was considered the original source of the new coronavirus with 96 per cent similarity in genes, it said.”

Remember — confirmed by the French, too, Chinese source.

Meanwhile, a study by French scientist Etienne Decroly at Aix-Marseille University, which was published in the scientific journal Antiviral Research on February 10, also found a “furin-like cleavage site” that is absent in similar coronaviruses.

I think we have been lied to, that it is a virulent virus. The Chicoms lie about everything so I can’t understand why so many conservatives are believing the crap the Chicoms are shoveling. I think a more realistic view of the dangers of this virus could be taken from the Diamond Princess, sort of like a self-contained event where you can follow the virus transmission rate, recovery, and death rate.

That being said I don’t fear the virus as much as the aggravation of mass quarantines where you would have issues of food and medications.

Your post #33 this thread complained about "unnamed experts and unnamed 'researchers' "...

Did you notice my post #175 gave actual names and affiliations, and also a journal name in which the results were published?

Not mere rumor-mongering, therefore. Available for independent verification.
