The coronavirus almost certainly will begin spreading in communities in the United States, and Americans should begin preparations now, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.
Its not so much of a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more of a question of exactly when this will happen, said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a new briefing.
The news caps weeks of fear that the coronavirus spreading from China may become a pandemic, disrupting the global economy and political landscape in ways that are difficult to forecast.
Iran, South Korea and Italy are now grappling with clusters of infection, even as the epidemic in Chinas Hubei Province seems to be slowing.
The emergence of these new hubs underscored the lack of a coordinated global strategy to combat the coronavirus, which has infected nearly 80,000 people in 37 countries, causing at least 2,600 deaths.
Officials at the C.D.C. said they did not know whether spread of the disease to the United States would be mild or severe. But Americans should be ready for a significant disruption to their daily lives, she added.
We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad, Dr. Messonnier said.

Hard as it is to believe, you are right. Schummer has already been peeping and moaning, and if they all work hard enough, there could be a bonus of a really bad turn in the economy, and then it's Katie, bar the door!
You lost me. I’m not trying to confirm anything. Just owning up to a possible mistake I made by siting JHs numbers, which don’t match up with the CDC’s numbers.
Yeah I might have misread it, no prob.

Hey, you forgot to add that global warming is going to kill us all.
Then why is the CDC worried about guns and vaping devices more than diseases
We need to go ahead and block S. Koreans, Japanese, and Iranians from entering the country.
They are concerned with all health and safety issues, as they see them.
...I am so screwed.
Well, on the plus side

AFAIK, this is the best response there’s ever been to an epidemic. The rapid sequencing of the virus genome really helped.
And of the 80,000 known infections, 28,000 are recovered.

He should be acting like a leader, and talking about a “tremendous response”, that it could be serious, but he will mobilize to protect the country. He should ask for 5 billion or 10 billion in emergency funding. You can’t screw up the initial response and recover. He should appoint a response team with the best people in the country. Don’t dick around a whine about the stock market. The consequences of over reacting are nil in the long run. The consequence of under reacting is President Sanders.
And of the people who've been through the full course of the disease, 30,595, "only" 8.9%, that's 2,708, have died...
How about a full and transparent public briefing instead of closed-door briefing to members of congress? What is the big secret? Maybe higher mortality rate? Maybe real numbers from China? Maybe more people infected in the US than publically disclosed? Maybe longer incubation and contagious period?
If Trump continues with kumbaya talk of it all under control and then it turns out that it is not, it will be his Katrina. Secret briefings are a poor start. Sorry, trust the government doesn’t work, even with Trump as president.
No, the source was the CDC. The NYT was just one of the news outlets reporting what they said.
