Several groups are working on a coronavirus vaccine, but there's no guarantee that it will be ready before the end of the current outbreak. One group says they may have an experimental vaccine ready for initial testing within a month. But experts caution this expedited timeline doesn't always allow for careful evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines.

"Within a month" would mean about now that something could be ready for testing. The rate limiting step, however, is safety testing. Then, of course, ramping up production is not a fast step either. However, 2 things work in our favor. One is that CDC says on their website that it seems to need direct contact for spreading. That may explain why it is not spreading very fast in US compared to China. Second is that severe morbidity (pneumonia) and fatality rates are low. CDC says 4.7% fatality, and that should be lower in US because of better health care available to those who become seriously ill.

It’s already too late for that. By the time widespread vaccinations would take place, the virus will be everywhere and most people who are going to get it already will have gotten it.

You are correct about why it’s spreading so fast. Only “bugs” that don’t kill right away survive. Also, as they spread, the less virulent ones survive the best, so if there are variations in the coronavirus, the deadliest ones will go away first.

Not sure what happened to the excerpt. Sorry about that. So they have the gene sequence and 3 major groups are preparing vaccines for testing. Since SARS and MERS are in the same class, coronaviruses, I don't think it will take years to develop vaccine, but safety and efficacy testing require some time.

Meanwhile some antiviral medicines may be helpful. WHO has one, that was mentioned elsewhere. Couple of days ago, I heard about sambucol, an extract of elderberry, which has tested very effective in cutting the length of viral illnesses. Not preventive, but reduces the course. Multiple peer-reviewed articles showing that it reduces duration of colds and flu. Very encouraging that new cases have dropped.

Not classed as a retrovirus, which group are troublesome in their ability to integrate into host DNA and change frequently. Rush was right that it is like a cold virus. For most people a bad cold is what it will cause. Remdesivir looks to be fairly effective against it, and is undergoing trials in China now. However, it's not widely available yet. If I worried about a bad cold I would try sambucol which has shown effective in clinical trials shortening duration and severity of colds and flu.
