The coronavirus sweeping the planet could be the 'Disease X' which experts have warned about, according to a World Health Organization representative.
The name is given to a future, mysterious pathogen which could break out among humans and wreak havoc across the world.
SARS-CoV-2 has infected around 80,000 people in the two months since it emerged at an animal market in Wuhan, China in December.
It has killed more than 2,600 and can cause severe lung damage and trigger multiple organ failure, mainly among old or weak patients.
Dr Marion Koopmans, a virologist for the WHO, said: 'Whether it will be contained or not, this outbreak is rapidly becoming the first true pandemic challenge that fits the disease X category, listed to the WHO's priority list of diseases for which we need to prepare in our current globalized society.'
Her comments come less than six months after a report led by a former WHO official which warned a flu-like illness could kill up to 80million people if it broke out.

We still don’t know the mortality rate on the cruise ship.
This virus takes nearly a month to kill.
And it isn’t ‘panic’ that will hamper the developed countries economies. It’s supply chain disruptions and the add on effects.
Many corporations, like Walmart, won’t have much to put on their shelves in a few weeks. It’s either all made in china or made elsewhere (vietnam, etc) with stuff imported there from china.
India is having issues making medications because their raw materials and ingredients come from China.
If you’re on any medications (even OTC ones), I’d try to grab a 6m supply. It will be dodgy going forward with those as we simply don’t make them in this country anymore.
20% of those infected with this develop serious complications. Of those 60% need an ICU bed. How many ICU beds does your town have? How many are full right now? IF we get an epidemic here those beds will fill up fast. Once they’re full, the mortality will be higher than 1%.
N95 masks only prevent your spreading it as much.
They do little to prevent your getting it.
Unless you have eye protection and some way to decontaminate ‘all of you’ once you return (hair, body, clothes, etc)...
The he media will see to that.
The good news for you that you can now go visit Asia and it won’t cost you as much and not be as crowded. Might I suggest China. When will you book your trip?
80 million, in a world of seven billion, is actually not that much when you consider that for most of the english speaking world, those numbers won’t come out of where they live.
I don’t believe the far east was affected much by the plague. And europe was unaware of the plague that affected the Americas, wiping out, possibly, 90% of the population.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not good, but it must be put into historical and geographical perspective.

I thought I read that the virus was spread through the air. Doesn’t a N95 offer any protection? I’m aware that I have to wash my hands etc.
Any way, I got these cool black masks. It will scare the pants off my unmasked neighbors if they see me wearing one. Much like when I pull down my hurricane shutters.
It’s currently considered airborne, and there is some evidence that it can enter through the eyes as well, which is an airborne route. That’s why professionals on scene are wearing googles or full hoods or lab suits. Another freaky thing is that apparently even after a patient tests negative following treatment, their poop continues to harbors the active virus.
