The mayor of South Korean city of Daegu said it was facing an “unprecedented crisis” after a series coronavirus infections linked to a single church service, as worries mounted in the country.

The number of cases of coronavirus in South Korea has doubled in 24 hours, reaching 204. [snip]

Hundreds of new coronavirus cases in China on Friday traced back to four prisons on the mainland, including two in Hubei, the center of the outbreak.

In Hubei, the Wuhan Women’s prison has 230 cases, and the Shayang Hanjin prison reported 41 on Friday.

Rencheng Jail in eastern China’s Shandong province has also confirmed 207 cases of the virus.

The Shandong government said that a prison guard at the jail started showing symptoms in early February. All 2,077 people held or working at the prison were given the nucleic acid test and, as of Thursday, 200 prisoners and seven prison officers had tested positive for the virus.

In Zhejiang province, 34 prisoners have been infected at Shilifeng jail. The provincial government said these were imported cases from Wuhan, and two prison officials had been removed from their roles.

Amazing the positive as well as negative impact the internet can have on reality that is being hidden by intentional governmental BS or failure to spend the money and effort to correctly handle problems.

Thanks for posting this..

Cruise ships could minimize this problem by just using outside air and not recirculating it.

Our grandmothers and mothers were our ID specialists.

If a family member got a cold, flu or whatever, they opened the windows and let the fresh air and sunlight in where the sick one was staying. Sometimes they shut the door into the room to “isolate” us.

Nah! A chicom sanctioned black market will peddle those possibly diseased organs on dark internet.

China is one of the world’s top ‘bone china’ producers... ever wonder where they get the bone?

You must be old or rich, because that kind of joke puts you on a list somewhere.

It made ME smile. But I am already on 100 lists.

Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

By Percy Bysshe Shelley

Talked to two expats from different parts of China, Southeast and Hainan.
They said the government is disabling quarantine checkpoints and allows freer movement. No body temperature checks and so on, people from the province are showing back to cities for work. There is increased police presence around at the same time and most government offices are closed.
It is hard to correctly interpret this information.
One reason might be that the government gives up on containment and starts to make economy work.

“One reason might be that the government gives up on containment and starts to make economy work.”

Agree, they may have reached the ‘acceptance’ phase and now figure that they’re going to lose a significant portion of their population (maybe 15%), but they’ll absorb it, and given their population, that conclusion does make some sense.

Their HUGE FEAR is not 200 Million dead, but rather proving Trump right, when he says that we are too reliant on China. That must NEVER be allowed to take hold.

I think it is a bit on the extreme side but quarantining the entire country is costly and seems like useless anyway.

“I think it is a bit on the extreme side but quarantining the entire country is costly and seems like useless anyway.”

I don’t know. I do think you’re right, in that this bug was never going to let itself be contained, given how it spreads.

Regarding proving Trump is right - that has to be a huge fear of China, as they’ve virtually put this country to sleep regarding our dependence on them. There was a book written where the author got into the nuts and bolts of our drug dependency on China, anywhere between 80% and 97% - and that is everything! It was ignored. Our lovely drug companies didn’t want Americans to know our dependency, so they got a labeling carve-out. Take a look at a bottle of any drug, and see if it says where it is made. Nope.

I don’t know what level of bioweapon research China has been doing, but think about this scenario (which doesn’t apply here, thankfully). China develops a bioweapon that mainly infects Westerners, and when Westerners go to try to produce a vaccine, we find we don’t have any production facilities remaining. Even if China isn’t trying to produce such a weapon, it has to be tempting for them to think about it.

What I really want is to see this country snapped out of it, and hopefully without too much pain (but there will be pain) - and finally admit that there are key strategic capabilities that we must keep here. A kind of Pearl Harbor, without the bloodshed.

Let’s hope less people are affected but there are fatalities in Italy already.

“Let’s hope less people are affected but there are fatalities in Italy already.”

That’s basically my wish. I good punch to the gut economically to wake us (and the world) up, but minimal human suffering, and that includes in China.

...but then again, it’s hard to see how we can have the first, without the second.
