Bloomberg camp's "dire" warning: Sanders soon unstoppable
Axios ^ | February 19th, 2020 | Mike Allen

Mike Bloomberg's campaign is sounding the alarm that Bernie Sanders will soon amass an unsurmountable delegate lead if the Democratic field stays split — and took the extraordinary step of suggesting laggards should drop out.

What they're saying: Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg's top strategist, said: "The fact is if the state of this race remains status quo — with Biden, Pete and Amy in the race on Super Tuesday — Bernie is likely to open up a delegate lead that seems nearly impossible to overcome."

"I don’t think many people understand the dire circumstances here."

Why it matters: Based on every national poll, plus steady access to money, Sanders is the indisputable — if underappreciated — frontrunner.

The Bloomberg campaign got high-profile validation of its theory:

David Plouffe, Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager, tweeted in response to Nate Silver's delegate projections through Super Tuesday — which show Sanders with 41%, followed by Bloomberg and Joe Biden with 18% each. "If this happens, Sanders would have a pledged delegate lead he’ll never relinquish."

Bloomie vs Bernie!

But even the most optimistic projections for Sanders do not give him a majority of pledged delegates.

Brokered convention, for sure.

So, isn't this the idea of having a primary, selecting a winner?

So when did Bloomie become a non-laggard?

The problem for Sanders is proportional assignment of delegates. In a winner-takes-all system where getting a plurality nonetheless gets you all the delegates, Sanders is a shoo-in. Currently, it looks like Bloomberg maybe ends up at #2, but buys up the delegates from the also-rans, thereby steamrolling Sanders at the convention.

And with a brokered convention, there will be cry for Hillary. That cry will become many and the convention will nominate Hillary!

So he’s spent himself into second place.

Now he’s calling for all the laggards to drop out - except for Elizabeth Warren. Yeah ok.

Well, it would be interesting, because 41% would not be a winner at all.

50%+1 delegate is a “winner”.

So then what? 60% of Dems wanted someone other than Bernie, but they have to choose Bernie because he had a plurality? Maybe ‘tis, maybe ‘tisn’t.

Liddle Mikey will have to go 3rd party then, which would probably reduce the D party to a 3rd place finish and assure a Trump landslide.

” except for Elizabeth Warren.”

He wants Warren to stay in to dilute the “progressive” vote.

Everytime Bernie runs for office he personally profits in homes and cash. What a racket.

Best strategy would be to not go after Bloomcube at all. After the debate send people out to say, he wasn’t exciting and didn’t live up to the hype. That’s how you do it.

If Bernie has 41% of the delegates by the end of Super Tuesday he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. Simply inertia will bring him over the top. Remember that President Trump ended up in the same position. Cruz and Kasic were the last two standing and could not come together. None of the ones left will be willing to drop out for the other. Not going to happen. Bloomberg won’t be able to throw ten billion into the race and make any difference. We have a lesson from history that teaches this. The forces of Senator Goldwater were determined, even though at the times they were not in the majority. But a combination of winning the right primaries and the “moderates” not coming together (Scranton, Rockefeller) ended up giving the 1964 Republican nomination to Goldwater.
