The United States led the entire world in reducing CO2 emissions last year while also experiencing solid economic growth, according to a newly released report.
“The United States saw the largest decline in energy-related CO2 emissions in 2019 on a country basis – a fall of 140 Mt, or 2.9%, to 4.8 Gt,” The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported on Tuesday. “US emissions are now down almost 1 Gt from their peak in the year 2000, the largest absolute decline by any country over that period.”
“A 15% reduction in the use of coal for power generation underpinned the decline in overall US emissions in 2019,” the IEA continued. “Coal-fired power plants faced even stronger competition from natural gas-fired generation, with benchmark gas prices an average of 45% lower than 2018 levels. As a result, gas increased its share in electricity generation to a record high of 37%. Overall electricity demand declined because demand for air-conditioning and heating was lower as a result of milder summer and winter weather.
The IEA noted that 80% of the increase in CO2 emissions came from Asia and that China and India both contributed significantly to the increase.
“In China, emissions rose but were tempered by slower economic growth and higher output from low-carbon sources of electricity,” the IEA reported. “Renewables continued to expand in China, and 2019 was also the first full year of operation for seven large-scale nuclear reactors in the country.”
“Emissions growth in India was moderate in 2019, with CO2 emissions from the power sector declining slightly as electricity demand was broadly stable and strong renewables growth prompted coal-fired electricity generation to fall for the first time since 1973,” the IEA concluded. “Continued growth in...

For the record, I think it is dumb and dangerous to lower CO2 since it is what plants and trees breath. It is one of the four necessary elements to sustain life. The other 3 being oxygen, water and light.

Of course our CO2 emissions are precipitously down after deporting all real industry to China. Thus the CO2 comes out of smokestackes in China. Oh, we still make potato chips here and this is counted under “industry” as in food industry.

“Environmentalism” is just economic efficiency. In a free and truly free-market society, the natural behavior of individuals and enterprises is maximum efficient use of resources. No one purposely wastes their own money.
I wonder how much the economy would have grown had we not wasted so much money on this greentard nonsense.

That’s a fair concern. And in the old days the scientific community would vigorously debate the issue. But today any debate is forbidden. Verboten!
Try to hold such a debate, and you’ll be shouted down. You might even be physically threatened.

It doesn’t really. But it’s led to a HUGH, almost unlimited amount of natgas that has replaced coal for our electricity generation. Unlike coal it doesn’t add much co2 to the atmosphere.

Yup.
All plant life on Earth dies below 150ppm. Planet Earth hit an all time low about 10,000 years ago (220ppm).
Thankfully we’ve bounced off that dangerously low level and are now at ~400ppm.
Still well below average.
How? By releasing lots of natural gas for us to use at a reasonable price. Thus we can convert several of our power plants over from dirtier coal to cleaner natural gas and reduce carbon emissions....and without tanking our economy to do so.
But of course since this is not the Gaia Worshiper’s preferred method of power generation (harnessing unicorn farts) ie something done by government diktat and at absurd prices that inflict massive pain on consumers, this just doesn’t satisfy Earth Mother Gaia’s demand for us to make a sacrifice.
