The nightmare at sea continues for thousands stranded on cruise ships in Asia due to concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak. The number of infections on board the Diamond Princess docked in Japan has jumped to 175, after another 39 cases were confirmed. A Japanese health official who was surveying those on board has been infected. He had been wearing a mask and gloves but not a protective suit. Meanwhile, the MS Westerdam remains adrift in the Gulf of Thailand. It was turned away by several ports, despite no confirmed infections on board.

Listened to a BBC Radio interview (several minutes long) this morning of a couple quarantined on the ship. All passengers confined to their rooms. This couple had a balcony which helped some but you still needed to get along with your roommate very well. Passengers with interior or window only cabins were allowed out to common areas one hour a day (sounds like prison), food etc. delivered by crew. This couple seemed to be trying to make the best of it with the worst being the extra unplanned disruption back home. For the record I have been on several cruises and plan on going again. Both times I was in Jamaica I came down with very bad cold, think it was the island and not the ship. I have not yet received any notice of super discounted cruises but would not be surprised if I did.
If you have a cabin on the inside with no windows, more like tortuous confinement. They finally had to start allowing them an hour and a half of time on deck to get fresh air.
People in balcony state rooms are faring a little better.
Removed Las Vegas 10 years ago and cruises last year.
Please add me to your list. Thanks!
Same for trains, subways, office building, dormitories, airports, office buildings, classrooms...you name it.
I read on Fox News about an Australian couple stranded on the Yokohama cruise ship ordering wine that was delivered by drone. Making the best of a terrible situation. Hope they sprang for the good stuff.
LOL!!!
Maritime law and country of registration. Good luck getting a next cruise discount let alone a dime.
Looking forward to my next cruise in June.
And now they don’t let you leave once the germs are a-flyin’.
When booking a cruise, you sign an extensive contract that defines your rights to litigate. For Princess, I believe that is United States Federal Court, where lawsuits that lack merit, standing, or are frivolous, are very likely to fail. The ship was quarantined by the government of Japan, not the cruise line. The quarantine procedures are also being dictated by Japan. I don't think there is any negligence by the crew that caused this. Good luck to those who try to sue Japan...
Welcome aboard!
I don’t think the Westerdam has any confirmed cases on board. Countries just won’t let it dock because it came from Hong Kong.
The plight of those on the Princess Cruise off of Japan is going to cause a serious rethinking on how to handle outbreaks on a ship, I suspect. It would have been better all around to put everyone on the ship in a more suitable quarantine location on shore, separated from each other as much as possible.
With everyone left on board, it appears the virus will just work its way through the entire population while putting health workers visiting the ship at risk as well (one of whom now has become infected.)
I view the data from the ship as the best indication of whether or not China will really be able to contain the virus. I don’t trust the numbers the Chinese government is putting out now. The current decline in reported daily cases began exactly one day after President Xi made stopping the virus a national priority. Well, it stopped reporting at least, but did the virus stop spreading as well?
I’d rather walk the plank.
I bet we can buy a used cruise ship real cheap in the very near future. This is one of those issues that could have a profound impact on the cruise industry. Makes buying an RV seem attractive, so find a public RV company and buy stock.
Winnebago,
BINGO!!! They have more than doubled the pps since sept 9th...looks like other have the same idea.
I decided some time ago I like sleeping in MY trailer over Hotels...I think hotels could be as virus prone as cruise ships
The ship could have invaded a helpless Pacific Island. Or Skull Island.
Glad none of my investments involve the cruise industry.
