After a night of watching coverage, including Fox News, that seemed to paint the Democratic primary in New Hampshire as the only primary held tonight and clearly holding that the winner of that primary would surely be our next President, I did a little research of my own:
Unopposed Incuments in New Hampshire Presidential Primary
NH Primary Votes Cast
2020 Trump 120,476*
2012 Obama 49,080
2004 Bush 53,962
1996 Clinton 76,797
1992 Bush 92,271
*87% Reporting
Enlightening research... thanks.
thanks. very interesting.
Bill Weld: 12,949 (9.2%) 87% reporting
will CNN be disappointed or will they see this as a win, it not being low single digit?
9 Feb: CNN: Why you should keep your eye on New Hampshire’s GOP primary
5. Trump & the Granite State
And from CNN Chief National Correspondent John King:
Four years after it gave him his first win as a presidential candidate, New Hampshire looks ready this week to make a powerful statement about Trump’s grip on the Republican Party.
A “cult” is what former congressman Joe Walsh calls today’s GOP — that as Walsh was dropping his 2020 primary challenge to the President after getting just 1% support in Iowa.
That leaves former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld as the last best hope of the “Never Trumpers.” It’s worth a quick peek Tuesday night to see it Weld can fare any better than low single digits.
The last two times America had a one-term president, that incumbent was wounded in the New Hampshire primary. Ted Kennedy got 37% against President Jimmy Carter in 1980; Pat Buchanan also received 37% of the vote, bruising President George H.W. Bush in 1992.
Those troubles were a harbinger of general election weakness for Carter and Bush. Trump has plenty of other obstacles to winning reelection, but he is counting on the state that began his 2016 win streak to make clear his grip on the GOP is beyond rock solid.

Bill Loeb is proud of this!!!
RIP Bill. You were what a read newspaper owner/editor should always be, for the people.
As he used to say about the editorial page and the Letters to the Editor pages of the Manchester Union Leader, the Editorial Page is mine, the Letters to the Editor belong to the people.
Compare this to the Washington Post’s combined editorial page and Letters to the Editor. Both sound like the rantings and ignorant ravings of the uneducated Marxist lunatics of old Russia. The degree of stupidity and lack of knowledge of history, economics, law enforcement, etc. is beyond measurement. That is why we are in trouble - STUPIDITY RULES.
THnk you so much, I havent heard ONE WORD about the votes Trump received THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
Well... the highest before this year (George H.W. Bush) lost while the three lower ones won.
Not trying to rain on your thread too much, but still.
Broken Glass Republicans
Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
The Fake News Media is looking hard for the Big Democrat Story, but there is nothing too fabulous. Wouldnt a big story be that I got more New Hampshire Primary Votes than any incumbent president, in either party, in the history of that Great State? Not an insignificant fact!
Bttt
In Feb 1992 GHWBush was riding high on the Persian Gulf War win. Then he didnt really campaign until after the summer convention. That will not be the case with PDJT
But, but, but ... You are not a reporter! How can we “believe” you, who-is-not-an-official Pravda (er, national press corpse) reporter on ABCNNBCBS?
True, but HW Bush was from neighboring Maine, sort of.
Buchanan mauled GHW in NH. It was the beginning of the end which showed the incumbent President took a deeply divided party with him into the general election.
It wont happen with Trump.
At this pace, Trump will probably pull 140,000 votes in the NH primary. That’s pretty freaking incredible people. That’s close to 50,000 more votes than a war winning incumbent with very strong links to a neighboring state (Bush ‘92).
Let’s say the base vote is 69-70 thousand. Trump doubled that without doing a whole lot of campaigning. 60 thousand or more peeps got off their butts and pulled the lever for Trump when they really didn’t need to. Trump is pulling more votes than Sanders and Buttigieg combined.
I’d like to know a little bit about voter registration and how many D’s flipped to R’s just for the primary.
Didn’t Trump encourage republicans to cross over and vote for the worst Dem candidate? The 120,476 would only be the people that didn’t cross over.
Thanks keat.
