In the Marine Corps, being able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance is a basic officer commissioning requirement. There are officer (and enlisted) MOSs that have higher security clearance requirements but if you cannot obtain a Secret clearance or, more importantly, you lose your security clearance, you are done as an officer. There are no officer MOSs that do not require some sort of security clearance.

I assume there is a similar requirement in the Army.

Yes, it’s the same in the army. In OCS you start you security clearance paperwork at the same time you start the course.

Yes, all my fellow officers and myself had Secret clearances. But, it’s not like I had the codes to the football or anything . . .
