Penguin Random House and Barnes & Noble collaborated to redesign the covers of twelve classic young adult novels with 'Diverse Editions' to display during Black History Month, which is recognized in February.
But as the books were debuted on Monday, the public's response wasn't positive.
Many suggested that it would have been more proactive to promote books written by authors from diverse backgrounds.
Social media was abuzz with readers voicing their concerns over the way two of the literary community's largest entities chose to approach diversity.
The books that were given new covers featuring characters of color were Alice in Wonderland, Romeo and Juliet, Three Musketeers, Moby Dick, The Secret Garden, The Count of Monte Cristo, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Emma, the Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Treasure Island, and Frankenstein.

Have you read Moby Dick? They wouldn’t have had to do anything but portray some of the crew on the cover. The other books are the problem.
Seems like cultural appropriation or something. They pretend that Treasure Island is an African-American story? Get your own stories!

Multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion have become code words to me. What they mean when I hear someone supporting these concepts is: “I am someone you should avoid and worthy of nothing but your contempt.”
Those concepts are fine, if they are gently encouraged and allowed to happen organically. To push those things for their own sake is toxic and destructive.
Why can’t they promote books by or about figures like Frederick Douglas or the poets of the Harlem Renaissance?
Penguin Classics is my favorite imprint. Their beautiful book covers are works of art in themselves.

Diversity means no white people. It’s that simple.

Handsome covers, informative introductions and easy to read texts. Classics are a staple of every educated person.
Ideas matter. They’ve shaped our world.
