Hawaii says it cant be hub for treating new virus
By AUDREY McAVOY

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii has only a modest healthcare system and cant be a hub for accommodating people potentially exposed to the rapidly spreading new virus that emerged in China in recent months, Lt. Gov. Josh Green said Monday.
He said the state only has the capacity to handle its own citizens and basic screening unless it gets significant support from the military.
We are happy to do our part but only modestly as needed for very sick people or for our citizens, Green said.
Green, who also is an emergency room physician, spoke after the U.S. government announced Honolulu would be one of 11 airports designated to receive U.S. citizens who have traveled in China within the last 14 days.
Hawaii was not currently expecting many potential patients, particularly after China Eastern Airlines, which operated the only direct flight from China to Hawaii, suspended service to the islands, Green said.
He said hed like the federal government to provide space on a military base with at least 120 beds if a large-scale quarantine is required. He said he doesnt anticipate that much would be needed, but the state needs to be prepared if the outbreak extends for months longer and breaks out further.
At all costs we have to be safe, Green said.
He said the Department of Homeland Security didnt notify Hawaii in advance that Honolulu was going to be on the list of airports, though state officials were able to talk to department officials over the phone an hour or two after the announcement

Plus, I doubt if a field hospital is going to cut it for this.

They know more then we know evidently.
From your link....
...U.S. health officials take dramatic steps to stop the spread of the coronavirus. They’ve set up a quarantine center on a Riverside County military base.
Recent video shows three tents set up on the tarmac of March Air Reserve Base. It’s where nearly 200 people will remain under federal quarantine orders.
Health officials say they’re taking a proactive approach to preventing the spread of the virus. Planes carrying potentially infected passengers can be diverted to the base. Then passengers can be moved directly into observation.
The center currently houses 195 Americans. All were evacuated last week from Wuhan, China to the base.
This is the first time in 50-years U.S. health officials have issued a quarantine order.
The coronavirus outbreak has killed at least 362 people, all but one in mainland China. The only victim outside China died in the Philippines.
It’s estimated more than 17,000 people are infected worldwide. So far there are 11 confirmed cases in the U.S.
The latest cases were discovered in central California. A couple in San Benito County, California recently tested positive. Neither has left their home since the husband returned from China....
Just found out that one of hubby’s coworkers has been in China for the past month. Don’t know what his status is or if/when he’ll be able to travel back here. Worried about the dangers of that close contact through work if/when the guy does come back!
There are currently 20,626 confirmed cases worldwide, including 426 fatalities.
Hubei province
(including Wuhan) 13,522 cases ... 414 Deaths
188 cases outside China...1 death (Philippines)
BTTT!
The only thing Honolulu has going for it is its large military presence. Hopefully, if the virus gets going on Oahu the military will declare martial law and take control.
Otherwise, both the City & County of Honolulu and the State of Hawaii have a long, long history of incompetence to do just about anything. Remember, this is the state that brought you the “this is not a drill” false alarm that Oahu was about to be vaporized by a nuclear missile.
Maybe the military is why it was chosen? The most disturbing them about that article for me is that the folks in Hawaii didnt know about being one if the entry points before HHS announced it. I hope the lines of communication get worked out better than this.
If you get the gallows humor in that post you have been on these threads for the last (almost) couple a weeks.
ya.
Fear not.:)
Im watching Bloomberg news - they just announced Hong Kong has first death due to virus - there are only 15 patients in Hong Kong
Not fearful.
Just watchful.
