Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saturday that National Public Radio reporter Mary Louise Kelly lied to him and broke an off-the-record agreement.
NPR reporter Mary Louise Kelly lied to me, twice, Pompeo said in a statement. First, last month, in setting up our interview and, then again yesterday, in agreeing to have our post-interview conversation off the record.
Pompeo and his staff said Kelly agreed that an interview with the secretary would be about Iran but that she asked questions about Ukraine and United States Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.
Kelly revealed on NPR that Pompeo afterward berated her for breaking her agreement about the topic of the interview but does not appear to have a recording of the exchange.
Kelly accused Pompeo of using the f-word during their conversation.
He shouted at me for about the same amount of time as the interview itself had lasted. He was not happy to have been questioned about Ukraine, Kelly said after her interview that was aired on NPRs All Things Considered. He asked, Do you think Americans care about Ukraine? He used the F-word in that sentence, and many others.
But Pompeo denounced her reporting.
It is shameful that this reporter chose to violate the basic rules of journalism and decency, he said.

it’s past time to stop funding NPR
Never trust the left. Everything is on record.
They all hate MAGA. Wake up, Pompeo.
NPR is anti-America. They are the domestic enemy we were warned about. That’s true for virtually all media, but it is especially galling that taxpayers fund NPR to work against us.
I thought Pompeo knew enough to only provide minimal written communication with the enemy of the people. I hope he has learned a lesson.
Ask Sen. Martha McSally how to deal with “liberal hacks”.
Almost as offensive as the union thug bureaucRATs acting as an army of RAT campaign workers on the taxpayers tab.
(the normal since...forever)
On Face the Nation this morning they displayed AND read the NPR females complete statement but only put up Mike rebuttal for 30 seconds then took it down with out reading it.
Yeah the media is not biased.
If the Republican Elite EVER thought of trusting the people on THIS WEBSITE more than those at CNN, they’d have a lot less trouble understanding just who the media is.
The problem is that it’s next to impossible to find people who understand the game, at least inside the Beltway.
Um, hello. Mr. Pompeo it's NPR, part of the corrupt liberal media. Just what did you expect. No disrespect, but these people who continue to believe and hope against hope that Liberals will play by some rules of honor are delusional. This is a symptom of the RINO disease.
Why would any sentient human being trust the press to abide by a promise? You don’t have to have your mug on the idiotbox in order to be a complete person.
They all hate MAGA. Wake up, Pompeo.
They all hate MAGA. Wake up, Pompeo!
They all hate MAGA. Wake up, Pompeo!!
They all hate MAGA. Wake up, Pompeo!!!
He knew she was a snake when he invited her in.
He said, she said.
Pence never has that problem. He won’t be alone with a woman without witnesses.
It’s hard to believe that this far in the game ‘our side’ hasn’t grasped the true nature of the left.
Are we to believe Pompeo or Kelly? A safe bet, Pompeo.
I believe Pompeo, but terribly naive on his part.
In doing "opposition research" I often listen to NPR.
What STAGGERS me, is when they go into fundraising mode, first touting listener supported radio, then listing off various corporations and foundations.. and then going into how the listener should send in a check (ie, the "listener supported" part). BUT, not even a whiff of mention of thank you to the general taxpayer. Folks like us that are forced at the barrel of a gun to fork over hard dollars to fund them.
