The country is facing a "grave situation" Mr Xi told senior officials, according to state television.
The coronavirus has killed at least 41 people and infected some 1,400 since its discovery in the city of Wuhan.
Travel restrictions have already hit several affected cities.
And from Sunday, private vehicles will be banned from central districts of Wuhan, the source of the outbreak.
A second emergency hospital is to be built there within weeks to handle 1,300 new patients, and will be finished in half a month, state newspaper the People's Daily said. It is the second such rapid construction project: work on another 1,000-bed hospital has already begun.
Specialist military medical teams have also been flown into Hubei province, where Wuhan is located.
The urgency reflects concern both within China and elsewhere about the virus which first appeared in December.

We have a lot of unknowns here as to this virus. Only time is going to tell us how serious it is or isnt. I generally do not buy into a lot of the hype, but when Xi says there is a problem I think we need to pay close attention.
The barn door cant be closed now, this virus cannot be contained at this point and with a 10 to 14 day incubation period we will know soon enough where we are on this.
So in the next ten days we have watch carefully to see the fallout and pray.
“The Cat is out of the bag”
looks to me like that cat is still IN the bag ... ;-)
“time for live virus on surfaces”
we’ve been wondering about that too ...
Yes sir, China is loosing billions right now with all the city closures. Expect full blockade of Beijing next.
This is very serious folks, most likely a weaponized virus from wuhan lab.
Get ready...
I have read that the virus came from someplace else other than the Wuhan Lab, but in China. At this point is doesn’t make much difference, it’s out there.
time for live virus on surfaces
Up to five days on cold hard surfaces. The virus has a protective sheath.
The source info can be found on the Daily Thread started yesterday.
And with a 14 day incubation, asymptomatic spreaders/carriers and the fact that folks are contagious up to five days before they get sick, this one is very tough to contain.
Practically impossible.
“I have Nortons Anti Virus so I am not worried.”
just make sure your virus definitions have been updated to include the chinese coronavirus ...
” Sorry, but this Corona-virus is small potatoes.”
so far ...
“Either way we will know more in about two weeks.”
definitely ...
Marking to read. Thank you
“The Chinese government is rational, circumspect and not prone to hyperbole.”
Seriously, laughed for a minute at that. Perhaps the funniest stupid thing ever written at FR.
It was not a comment on the fact they are corrupt, lying totalitarians.

But they are rational, circumspect and not prone to hyperbole.
“The China government is aerial spraying disinfectant over infected cities.”
what kind of aerial disinfectant can be sprayed in bulk that will kill viruses inside of buildings and on interior surfaces? sounds like bullshit to me ... or maybe fake spraying by PRC gov to try to assuage panic ...
“or maybe fake spraying by PRC gov to try to assuage panic”
They envision a loss of control and that freaks them out.
All for show...to appear concerned and as a serious asset to the people.
If hes saying this then that means its twice as bad as hes admitting.
Completely agree. If he's making a public announcement, they are admitting that the situation is already out of control IMO. Saving face (mianzi) is huge in China, and someone of Xi's stature to admit that he wasn't able to control the situation would certainly create a loss of face for both himself and other officials.
China is 41 dead for 1400 cases (officially) which works out to .03% not 4.0%
“But they are rational, circumspect and not prone to hyperbole.”
Again, hilarious.
If the Chicoms didn’t have irrationality and illogic and over the top hyperbole they’d not be Chicoms.
A delusional statement on your part, and that’s not hyperbole.
Do you trust the numbers from China?
WHO says it’s 4%.
Not that WHO is necessarily trustworthy. But I trust them more than China.
Original SARS was about 10%
