Matt Gaetz says he was kept off impeachment defense team over war powers vote

One of President Donald Trump’s strongest supporters on cable news and Capitol Hill was surprisingly excluded from his impeachment defense team — and he has suspicions as to why.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) was widely believed to have been a frontrunner to join a select group of House Republicans to defend the president through media outreach and providing consultation to his legal team, but he was snubbed.

In an interview with Politico, Gaetz said he wasn’t entirely sure why he was kept off the team, but he has been told by someone in the White House that Eric Ueland, the legislative affairs director, was “responsible for the brush back.”

“I don’t know why it would serve someone in the White House to manufacture a divide between the president and one of his best communicators during impeachment,” Gaetz told the outlet.

When reached by Politico, Ueland wouldn’t comment directly on the Florida Republican’s allegation. He did, however, mention Gaetz’s support for the House’s war powers resolution, which would limit the president’s ability to wage further military action against Iran without congressional approval.

Rep. Gaetz: Trump suspended Ukraine military aid over corruption concerns The resolution did not signify a shift in policy or position for Gaetz, who began courting fellow House Republicans to support the measure after Democrats added one of his amendments to it, but Trump loyalists dragged him for the move nonetheless.

“While the Trump administration was disappointed in Mr. Gaetz’s [Iran war powers] vote, the president’s successful policy to reduce Iranian terror and misbehavior proves the path laid out by the president is working,” Ueland said in a statement to Politico. “We look forward to working with Mr. Gaetz in the future.”

Gaetz responded, “He knows it’s House Democrats, not Iran, who are impeaching the president, right?”

It was your right, Matt, to cast your vote. It’s Trump’s legal team’s right to pick their team members.

Sorry.

Well if you're not on board - then you're NOT ON BOARD.

“He said he spoke to trump explaining the vote before he did it...”

Does anyone know what the explanation was?

So, will Gaetz now flip to the Dark Side and start trashing President Trump, or will he redouble efforts to get back on the President's good side?

Gaetz still seems a little snarky.

Gaetz said, “He knows it’s House Democrats, not Iran, who are impeaching the president, right?”

Supporting the War Powers Act was a really stupid and pointless move. It was going nowhere and was strictly a symbolic act. If he was worried about his constituency back home, he could have easily sidestepped the issue by stating he does not support doing meaningless legislation.

he also supported that sex fiend that just lost her job- said noone had a right to complain about her having inappropriate relationships with people who worked for her- which by the way violated government rules-

While Matt is good on some things- his views on others is quite liberal- Anyone supporting climate change regulations is either ignorant about the facts, or just plain power hungry corrupt-

Gaetz said, “He knows it’s House Democrats, not Iran, who are impeaching the president, right?”

The same could be asked of Gaetz when asked why he threw them some shade on Iran.

Trump agreed with him? As in, Trump would have liked other Republicans to vote the same way?

Yep! He will..it’s not in some of the republicans to hold the line when the enemy attacks or the tough gets going! Hey buster you made your bed with the rats now lay on it! The other option write down “I’m sorry for my stupidity” a million times on a blank sheet of paper and maybe you’ll be forgiven....I’m sorry for my stupidity, i’m sorry for my stupidity, I’m sorry for my stupidity, I’m sorry for my stupidity, I’m sorry for my stupidity, etc. etc. and etc.

Gaetz always struck me as okay but kinda creepy at the same time. Guess it was only a matter of time for his true RINO colors to shine through.

His aligning himself with the democrats on the war powers vote can not be explained without thinking the democrats have him compromised. It can not be explained by logic, common sense, or duty.

Live and learn, Matt. I like you, but remember, this impeachment is not about you and hurt feelings.

Sounds like he wants a group of supporters on his team, not detractors.

He also could have stupidly decided (or have been advised to!) to show some “independence” from Trump. Never underestimate the stupid advice that politicians get or what they talk themselves into! I am not ready to give up on him yet.

You guys love to lose. He’s in a military district. I laugh at your stupidity when you throw out a good house member for a democrat. You did that big time in 2018. Bet you think you are just awesome.
