Four patients in Scottish hospitals are being tested after showing symptoms of coronavirus.
The new strain of the virus has so far killed 17 people in China and there are more than 500 confirmed cases.
Prof Juergen Haas, a specialist in infectious diseases at the University of Edinburgh, said three of the suspected cases were in Edinburgh.
All the patients had respiratory symptoms and had been in Wuhan, thought to be the source, in the last 14 days.
Wuhan has gone into lockdown, along with another Chinese city, Huanggang.
The fourth case in Scotland is thought to be in Glasgow.

Does anyone have information about the incubation period of this virus ?
Or information on how long, after exposure, the virus becomes communicable ?
I have seen no information on this matter.
Am I a bit dense?
I would have thought that ANYONE who’d been in China since 01 Jan 2020 would have headed to their local physician or the ER for testing.
My physician laughed when I told her the only way I would leave my area was if I were either in a coma or dead.
Crowds of more than 3 people (counting myself) cause me to melt. For sure I wouldn’t go to any airport/train/whatever or away from my city.
Couple of reason why.
The first one goes to what Kilted Irish Kilt was asking. What is the incubation period. Some people who are flying with the virus may not even be showing symptoms yet. They may feel fine but they are contagious. I don’t know about the coronavirus but you can transmit a cold for atleast a day before you even know you have it.
Also, when there is an ‘outbreak’, most people don’t want to go to a clinic unless they know they are infected. They fear that by going there they risk exposing themselves to other sick people.
The UK still has relatively open borders, I believe. (I stay away from crowds, also.)
Apparently, some basic prepping now requires a 100 count box of N95 or better disposable face masks.
Note, these are only about 80% effective, perhaps mainly because such viruses like to hook rides on larger particles (e.g., snot) -— AND having a mask on keeps people from touching their face.
“what’s under the kilt” ping.
Even if you wear a N95 you need to take it off to eat or drink which if in a restaurant you are screwed.
One person on a place infected equals 600 more exposed who leave the airport and travel where ever to infect a few hundred more.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Q: What does a Scotsman wear under his kilt?
A: Shoes and socks.
Good thing I keep kosher, so almost never am able to eat at a public restaurant.
Eh? I though you lived in Israel?
Aye ! ,
and the 'breeze through the trees' (ie: Hairy legs)!
Now you know why the Celts were always a little cranky !
Wonder if this coronavirus gives you the Schlitz?
A Jew keeping kosher is very difficult !
Meat and diary are never served together.
Furthermore,'keeping kosher' requires separate plates & silverware, which are never mixed .
One set of plateware and silverware for diary;
another separate silverware and plateware for meat.
The two sets are NEVER mixed, or even cleaned together !
True Kosher meals proscribe following strict rabbinical procedure in meat preparation
and the procedure is similar to Islamic "Halal" meat preparation.
I’m familiar with the rules. But Jewbacca said he can’t often find a Kosher restaurant.
If there are few Kosher restaurants in Israel itself, that bodes ill for the faith.
Interesting. I do not eat dairy products anyway. No milk, butter or yogurt.
How about eggs? I know you don’t eat pork products.
Where these laws instigated due to contamination problems is days past? Pigs did carry a lot of disease in the old days like the wild pigs carry now.
So, this is an underground epidemic that could go worldwide before anybody realized.
And it mutates rapidly.
Ah, don’t worry, folks. Just a passing round of the sniffles. Most people probably recover.
Kind of.
I am Israeli and my home is there.
But 9 months out of the year I work (fly) at various US Air Force bases. I’m in the desert SW at this moment.
