You learned wrong. There is no continuum. The goal of socialism is communism - V.I. Lenin. Communists hate fascists, or have you not been paying attention to Dem talking points which usually call someone a Fascist?
Do they both murder people? Yes, but the Communists murder so many more that the Fascist murder-number becomes a rounding error.

Communism is now a form of fascism. Both work with the means of production, both are philosophically about ruling through force and intimidation, both are oligarchs,
the essentially are the same, in the end. And calling a communist a fascist, is not only true, but it riles them.
