How is us spending endless tons of money and many lives in Afghanistan keeping us safer?

I have a hard time not agreeing with POTUS despite wondering about the source for the info in this article.

For young men, Chicago and Baltimore are more dangerous than Afghanistan. More Marines were killed at either Tarawa or Pelilu or Iwo Jima than in Afghanistan in the whole time since the beginning

our location in Afghanistan is strategic. Bases in Afghanistan and Iraq flank the real enemy that is Iran.

I would guess the argument for us being there is to have a strategic place to deploy from?
Since the ME is probably our biggest threat, not to mention NK and the like,that is why we are stationed there?
