A container with 23.94 tons of American chicken feet cleared Chinese customs Tuesday, potentially heralding the start of a new trading era between the two countries just days before they sign a long-awaited trade deal.
The chicken feet, or phoenix claws as theyre known in Chinese recipes, were inspected and approved for unloading by customs in Shanghai, the official Securities Times reported. The event marks the return of U.S. poultry meat to China five years after it was banned, it said.
China prohibited the import of all U.S. poultry products in 2015 in response to cases of avian flu in America. That stance changed last year as demand for alternative animal protein surged after the spread of deadly African swine fever slashed the countrys hog herds and reduced pork supplies.

I love me some Little Feat, seen them a few times.
NC has always had large scale poultry production. Holly Farms Chicken started in Wilkesboro in the 50’s and grew to be large enough to be bought out by Tyson or Perdue (can’t recall which) in the late 80’s or early 90’s.
Big chicken killed the small producers.
I’ll believe they’re wanting to play fair when we start exporting The Bishop’s Noses to them.
With all these chicken missing their feet surely there’s a market for prosthetic chicken feet.
They were the real deal...
My wife is a Filipina, and for her, “chicken paws” are a treat. She cuts off the tips of the talons, boils the rest for a while, lets ‘em cool to a safe temperature, and then goes to munching on them. Crunch, crunch, crunch - more like a dog with a bone, than, say, Doritos. After a while it gets a bit unnerving and I leave the room...
American chicken feet doing the job Chinese chicken feet wont do. Murica!
The funny thing is, my wife happens to be cooking chicken feet right now. I told her about this story about this shipment and she laughed her head off at the coincidence!
“This is the other way around................American Chicken feet in China...................”
Might make a good parody of “An American Werewolf in Paris”....
I sell a lumberyard in Goldsboro who has been selling to several of these chicken house builders for the last ten years. It was huge business for them during the Great Recession when there was no other new home construction going on.
We also sell Hog Slat over in that neck of the woods.
Did a job for a chicken farmer in Goldsboro 30+ years ago. He was explaining the operation to me and told me about a neighbor who lost 60,000 birds to an ice storm on night.
I saw Feat both during and after the Lowell George era. They are my favorite band.
I wish, a long time ago, there was a connection like this...
