The Senate is weighing significant restrictions on reporters covering the upcoming impeachment trial, including limiting the movements of reporters and upping security screenings for the press.
The Standing Committee of Correspondents, an elected body of journalists that govern and advocate for print media, wrote to Senate leaders on Tuesday "vigorously" objecting to the proposed restrictions, which the group said included forcing reporters into penned areas and barring them from walking freely around outside the Senate chambers.
They said it was not clear how the proposed rules added to safety "rather than simply limit coverage of the trial."
The group's chair, Sarah Wire, argued against the proposed restrictions in a Twitter thread.
"Installing a magnetometer means the Senate trial will have a soundtrack of 'beep, beep, beep' as 90+ reporters walk in and out all day," she wrote.
Penning reporters limits the public's access to their elected officials, she said.
Electronics are currently banned from the Senate chamber, and reporters had unsuccessfully sought an exemption to the rule for the historic trial.
Chair of the Senate Rules Committee Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Missouri, said some of the restrictions "appear to be necessitated just by the rules" and argued that penning reporters was done during the Clinton impeachment in 1999.

There were several reporters on video, taking pictures of documents and notes during the house hearings. I’d ban them all, except, I want Americans to see the democrats explode on national TV during this fiasco.
So they can push their Dem master's plan on the weak Repub Senators (Collins, Mitt, etc...)?
I don’t trust the Senate Republicans.
Keeps Democrats from playing to their captive media during the trial.
It will shorten it enormously. This isn’t is going to be the Kavanaugh hearings on steroids.
Sucks to be the House managers.
CNN doesn’t need to be there. They will just make it up anyway.
Maybe it can be CSPAN only and let the other channels relay it.
They’ve already written half of their stories, just leaving a few spaces for a couple facts, to make it sound real.
IF it’s like the House circus Dems want easy access to Fake News to give gaslighting interviews during the proceedings. Makes a lot of sense to block that, actually.
