The Royal Family are said to be "hurt" at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's announcement they will step back as senior royals.
Prince Harry and Meghan did not consult any senior royal before making the statement, the BBC understands.
Buckingham Palace was "blindsided", said BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond, as talks about their future had begun but were in very early stages.

Right there, that is not something someone should tolerate.
So, you'd be okay if Secretary of State Pompeo showed up for a meeting with foreign dignitaries in a polo shirt and jeans? You were okay with Michelle displaying her armpit hair, bras straps and panty lines?
The Queen is perfectly within her purview to create policy for what the royal family may wear for public appearances.
Queen Elizabeth should thank her lucky stars that William is older than Harry.
"The Crown" is fiction, and very poor fiction. Your comment reminds me of people who judge Christianity by Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
You nailed that, totally.
She was on a basic cable show. Like Jussie Smollett, most people never heard of her or her show.
Her fame only came when Megan met Harry.
Did you know who she was before she met Harry? I didn't.
That's not totally true.
If Harry was a professional athlete or Meghan was the star of a weekly reality show there would be several Americans very concerned about them. /s
Yes. T-shirt and shorts for all I care.
You were okay with Michelle displaying her armpit hair, bras straps and panty lines?
Couldnt care less. I mean, I sure as hell wasnt looking at her.
The Queen is perfectly within her purview to create policy for what the royal family may wear for public appearances.
And she can also be told to screw off.
“Did you know who she was before she met Harry? I didn’t.”
I knew her biggest accomplishment was appearing in the TV series “Suits” prior to her meeting Harry. Apparently she also appeared in a number of television series (in bit parts) and movies. I must confess I knew little about her as I watch very little television and extremely rarely watch a movie. Books are more entertaining, and more educational, than the content generated by the media companies to keep the masses from doing more than superficially examining the world around them.
While she may not have been a big name, she apparently was well enough connected to the inside young Hollywood crowd to be seen by Harry. Without connections and visibility in private settings, it is unlikely she would have hit his radar screen. This makes my point that most of the 1%, and their hangers on, lead lives invisible to the masses.
Thank you for making your point about ‘The Crown’ - it’s unnerving how many people I speak to who think they are experts on a certain matter based on a Netflix show. (Not just this one.) Wouldn’t it be nice if people made more effort to be culturally and historically literate as a whole?
You make some good points...but I think we give the Queen and other senior members of the monarchy (and their staff) too much of the benefit of the doubt.
Ms. Markle comes across to me as someone who is eager to please and make good impression to the boss. Something tells me there were forces within the palace who were unwelcoming and passive aggressive from day 1.
I don’t like her woke politics, but I appreciate the 1776 spirit of this whole endeavor. Hope her baby will appreciate a childhood where his identity is not defined by the Royal Family, and he can reconnect with his heritage on his own terms as he gets older.
It would, indeed.
Bull Sh*t! the royal family is probably doing a joyful dance that this ‘Duchess’ is moving on up. They are probably as sad as they were forces to kick the Duke of York to the curb.
"We're going to be great! We're going to be like... ...one of those poor couples on the subway who hold hands. How much is the subway?
Sixty cents. But if you spit, it's a $500 fine.
Then I won't spit.
Good! None of the best people do.
I'll get a job! That's what I'll do! I'll get a job! I'll work! God, this'll be great!
Good! Look how excited he is.
I'll come home from work. You'll be ironing. We'll eat some cheap, disgusting food."
