Senate GOP wants speedy Trump acquittal
The Hill ^ | December 28, 2019 | Jordan Carney

Senate Republicans are plotting a speedy acquittal of President Trump as they strategize ahead of the impeachment trial.

After weeks of public haggling from within the caucus, GOP senators are largely lining up behind a shorter proceeding with few, if any, witnesses, paving the way for them to hand Trump an early election-year victory.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said his goal is “to have as short a trial as possible.”

“I think there's a desire by senators, quite honestly, to get this chapter closed and moved forward,” Graham told reporters.

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said that when it comes to a trial “shorter is better,” and that he thought his colleagues were coalescing behind that.

“I think shorter is better for lots of reasons,” Cramer said. “I think people are ready to move on.”

Republicans are also stressing though that they don’t want to simply dismiss the articles against Trump. The House voted earlier this month to impeach Trump on two counts: one charging him with abuse of power in his dealings with Ukraine and the second with obstructing Congress during its investigation of those actions.

“I’m ready to get this thing and get it done,” said Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.). “It’s time for him to have his day in court. … I don’t want to a vote to dismiss. I want a vote to acquit. The president deserves to have due process.”

Graham, who previously advocated dismissing the articles, added that a “motion dismissed will not stand. … I don't want a motion to dismiss. I want a vote on the articles themselves.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has emerged as a close ally of Trump’s, has floated trying to dismiss the article

I don’t understand the big deal with waiting to give the impeachment charges to the senate when they get back from their millionth vacation this year. I mean we did the exact same thing in 1998. Why are we giving nancy so much credit?????

The fakehead Yale shrink, Bandi Lee, is lobbying for the House to demand Trump submit to a Psych test as part of impeachment.

Listened to her interview with Mark Levin. SHE’S the one who needs a long stint in a rubber room

Simply apply the rule of law and eliminate all second party witnesses and hearsay, then question under oath the only two witnesses who had first hand knowledge and compare their testimony to the recorded transcript. That will exonerate Trump.

Then refer the actions of Schiff and Nadlers illegal proceedings to a grand jury for criminal prosecution.

Should take an hour, but its government so it will tak up a whole day.

” Senate GOP wants speedy Trump acquittal”

How about that for biased headline. They should have gone all the way:
“Trump’s lackeys in the Senate want a speedy rigged trial to let the President off”

Let’s put it behind us for 2020.

It won’t be behind us until the day Trump leaves the White House.

Agree. The American people must hear from the Biden staffer hoaxblower who started the impeachment of a POTUS. We must insist the GOP Senate support the GOP POTUS. If not now, when?

Trump has been cleared of any law breaking by Democrats over the past 3 years of SC and House investigations.

Dem Obama holdovers and the DNC have not been publically exposed because the news media bias has covered up Dem
spying, exposing, paying for the Russian dirt.

I feel Trump deserves the time he needs to get the truth out there.

It can only help his campaign to show the criminals and traitors of the Dem party leaders and the press who
make it possible to get away with it.

A lengthy trial legitimizes the “impeachment” farce. End it abruptly and shove it back in the faces of the Dem coup plotters. Investigations can follow.

No, it lets them get away with this Seinfeld about no crime
having taken place impeachment.

The in poster whistelblower must be exposed, the Bidens and Pelosi’s son need to be shown to be crooks.

The wiretapping needs to be exposed as does the Fisa abuse.
Spying, a coup needs to be explained.

At least one week of hearings, to show 3 years of wrong doing by the Dems.

Set the stage for indictments by Durham.

Wouldn’t want members of the “Old Boys Club” lose decorum by throwing horseapples at each other in retaliation, would we? If the depth of corruption in both parties became public knowledge, the voting public would lose respect for their political masters. How many politicians leave office no richer than when they entered?

the gutless coward GOP senators will not change the rules so that the Senate can reject the phony charges with prejudice.

interesting - did not realize the GOP had 67 seats in order to do that. You must know something the rest of us don't.

It still won’t be behind us. The other side never stops - they will not stop. Some actually believed it was “over” after Mueller bombed out. The Left will NEVER stop. They can only be thwarted with equal diligence...unfortunately our side has actual lives to lead that interferes with that - something the Left can’t be bothered with. The Left wants total chaos.

He might know that it only takes 51 senators to change the rules of the senate - not 67.

Yes, the so called nuclear option on cloture and filibuster or rule changes. It only requires a simple majority, which is why after the Democrats did this under Harry Reid as majority leader at the time, it than allowed Mitch and the Republicans to give them what they deserved after the Democrats first opened pandoras box of a 51 vote simple majority. So, now we have two conservative SCOTUS appointments and @180 new Federal judges. Which is why Mitch can change the Senate impeachment trial rules with a 51 simple majority vote and get the trial done quickly.
