Darryl McKellar makes teaching look easy. Over 20 years in the classroom, the English teacher has mastered some of the job’s trickiest tasks.

He has a writing assignment for the 10th graders in his second period class today, based on a short story they read, “The Lottery.” “When I say lottery, what do you think? Breanna, what do you think?” “Drama,” she says. “Why drama?” McKellar asks. “When you win a lot of money, it causes a lot of controversy,” she says. “Mo’ money, mo’ problems. Who said it?” McKellar asks. There’s some murmuring. It sounds familiar, but these kids weren’t around in the ’90s. “It’s…a rapper?” one student ventures. “Wait,” McKellar says, launching into a pretty spot on impression. “Uh huh, uh huh, baby, baby.” The students laugh. “Biggie Smalls!” a student says. McKellar nods. “Notorious B.I.G. But he also says we can’t expect to change the world until we do what? Change who? Change yourself.”

Biggie Smalls was a thug rapper with a long arrest record who was gunned down in the street by another thug. Someone for students to look to as a role model?

When I went to school I was taught by nuns wearing the full nun gear. I didn't relate to them as a role model but I respected them and often feared them.

The state of New York recently passed a law requiring prospective school teachers to take a literacy test to get their license, but repealed it the following year because 36 percent of whites failed the test on the first try, while 54 percent of Hispanics and 59 percent of blacks failed.

In other words the State of New York is knowingly putting a large number of illiterate teachers in classrooms.

Should just start with some teachers of math, history and common sense ... then I think the rest will take care of itself.

I’m not optimistic as most people, EVEN HERE, still send their kids to public schools, rather than seriously consider options (such as living in a smaller house/apartment, not quite keeping up with the Jones’, driving a small car to to the office, rather than an F350, etc.).

The last thing “children of color” need is to see more minorities on the government teat with workfare programs - and teaching in minority areas is the ultimate workfare program (no results achieved or expected, employment for life after a couple of years, and far fewer work hours than the peons paying their salaries).

Just like eliminating crimes reduces “men of color” in jail, so will lowering the teaching standards put more “men of color” in the classroom.
