Considering what they teach in those indoctrination centers, I understand the point.

I had a high school friend who refused to go to college. He’d started a landscaping and grounds maintenance business and was making 50K a year in 1978 by the time he graduated.

Plumbers and electricians are vital to an advanced society just as surely as are heart surgeons. I,for one, want my heart surgeon to be a college graduate...as well as having been at the top of his class. OTOH it's hard to imagine an electrician needing a college degree. Apprenticeship training? Of course! A degree? I doubt it.

Of course a person who designs electrical installations...in single family homes and 110 story skyscrapers probably needs a degree (or two).

The result? They are sinking into debt without accomplishing what they think they are accomplishing.

And the greatest irony is that the massive debt these blacks and hispanics (and whites too) are accumulating is owed to Fed.gov. Talk about selling yourself into slavery for the man!

I burned out and dropped out of college on the first try. After I got my stuff back together, I started back at a community college. No more 400 person classes and prima donna professors. It was wonderful people like you, truly gifted teachers and engineers, that got me back on track. I eventually got back to a four-year college and received my BS in engineering at (bing!) 29 years of age. It’s been a great 24 year career so far, and still going.

Thank you for your contribution, and I am truly sorry for your loss.

A friend of mine is upset about her grandson joining the Marines. "I wanted him to go to collage!"

I pointed out that the two were not mutually exclusive. Not sure she believed me.

Yep, when I started a new career at 49 as a CNC machinist, a local shop owner/benefactor came to our school and told us we may never get rich, but we’d always have ajob, if we wanted one.

It MUST be cheaper to keep hiring newbies, rather than to enjoy the benefits of expertise, loyalty and maturity.

Really it isn't.

It is sort of like secretaries and receptionists. They were replaced with Microsoft Office and Phone trees. The problem is that you have frustrated customers and high paid executives spending their time standing at copy machines.

They are trading a very short term gain for a long term loss.

I worked with two companies closely, one that was privately held and kept their old timers around, the son of the founder still came to work a couple days a week and he was in his late seventies. They have been on a slow but steady expansion. The other got rid of it's older employees and support personal. It recently filed for bankruptcy. I laughed and laughed when I heard that because I predicted it ten years ago.

I will say this, that publicly held companies have to show a certain amount of profit (not growth, profit) every quarter as their only value seems to be what their stock is doing. This leads to stupid decisions to gain a small boost in stock price. Like spinning off your specialty branch or going cheap on quality. Or doing something that will get your long term customers mad to please a tiny fraction of the population that will never buy your product any way.

“College is not for everyone, and taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize it.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Most college students are females. The majority of the female college grads I have personally met have jobs like; nanny, perfume sales at Penney’s, barista at Starbucks, etc. and the stay at home Moms who got their MRS degrees in college. Jobs that don’t even require a high school education.

Universities are obsolete and will be all but disappeared in 20 years.

Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green both got law degrees.
That’s all I need to know about the system.

If one’s future college mentions “diversity”, avoid it at all costs.
If one’s future college has “studies” majors, avoid it at all costs.
If one’s English Department has not even one course in English Literature, and considers grammar to be optional, avoid it at all costs.
Be very very wary of ANY liberal arts degrees. Study them carefully. If they are demanding and difficult (as they used to be) jump in. If they have the intellectual quality of a NYT journalist, avoid at all costs.

I was having a conversation with a woman I work with occassionally, and mentened the university where I graduated.

She said her brother was my age and went there when I did, but started painting houses in the summer and got a business going. He decided to drop out and focus on his business. He now employs 15 people and is a well to do businessman.

I have also been successful in my career.

As far as I’m concerned, we both did the right thing.

Unless you are planning for a solid career, college isn’t necessary. One of my four has a four year degree. (Astronautical Engineer) the book editor doesn’t have one and does fine. Another is completing her BA and will likely get a Masters because for some reason it’s required to be a librarian. Number four is a trucker and obviously doesn’t need college.

I went to community college then a mid size state university. I got a far better education at community college than the university. Business school. University professors who hadn’t held a job in business for 20-30 years VS instructors who went to work after class was over.

Take away college football (with alumni tailgate parties), college basketball, and fraternities (with their social aspecs), and all Division-1 schools would dry up.

I went to college before the Internet when we actually had to learn things.

Today, kids think they know all that needs to be known, and the Internet is there to confirm anything they doubt is true.

So, who needs college anymore?

That’s not necessarily true. The trades are very popular here but it’s not all flowers and sunshine. These are very difficult jobs with long hours, physical labor, and usually having to work in all sorts of weather conditions. It is a good job for those who can do it. But these are not jobs for everyone.

And it’s not guaranteed job either. I remember when the recession hit, construction died and the trades took a hit. A lot of tradesmen were laid off.

My uncle was an electrician. But he had to give it up. It gave him serious back problems he’s still dealing with. He ended up having to go back to school anyway to do something else.

A lot of that is “degree inflation.” If everyone has the same something, it’s value diminishes on the marketplace. So many people now have bachelors degrees it no longer impresses anyone. It’s not the golden ticket to a good job the way it used to be.

So now you got a lot of jobs out there that are now demanding bachelor degrees today when 20 years ago you didn’t need any college at all.
