WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — It's a rare occasion in Washington when Democrats, Republicans and the White House can share a victory on any policy issue. But both sides are poised to pass legislation that will guarantee 12 weeks of paid parental leave for all federal employees.

The House approved the provision Wednesday as part of a must-pass defense authorization bill and Senate Republicans appear to have the support to send it to President Donald Trump's desk next week. Though it only applies to 2.1 million federal employees and only covers time off for the birth or adoption of a child, proponents of the legislation have described as a first step toward paid family leave and paid medical leave benefits for all American workers.

While congress is giving free stuff why not just retire early to raise a family. Get paid 100% of whatever a person was making prior to the family leave. This will get a lot of votes along with free electoral college for everyone.

How in the world can an employer trying to run a business pay people for 3 MONTHS who aren’t working?

This is full fledged socialism. Insanity. You want a kid? Make some sacrifices. We did. Stop expecting everyone else to cover your butt.

Maybe employers should be required to make the first 6 months car payments for new employees so they can afford to come to work. Just about as “logical”

The very last people who should be getting any handouts are federal employees. We’re already on the hook for > 100 trillion for their pension and medical. They don’t need anything else from us.

Pandering.

This makes me sick. So unfair to single, childless, or older couples. why do they have to cover for people with kids (even more) and have pay that should go to them being used to cover benefits for a small group.

Make financial choices, save and plan. It’s not the employers responsibility.

How in the world can an employer trying to run a business pay people for 3 MONTHS who aren’t working? <<—

By lowering the wage by 25% (3 divided by 12)...plus an additional 15% for retraining and lack of production..

a 40% reduction in wages will allow both sides to win...employees can get what they want and employers can maintain a few % points of profit....I hope the employees get to vote on it....opt in or opt out...

"maybe employers should be forced to pay 6 months of car payments so employees can get to work". Wheres the "like " button onthis page🤗🤗🤗. lol. you nailed the absurdity of it all!

who is going to hire any woman who might have a kid ever again?

I can see a ton of discrimination lawsuits, women who dont get hired and men demanding 12 weeks off for the birth of a kid. smh.

Give them up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Ridiculous to give them paid leave, let them use up their accrued vacation and sick time if they want to be out that long - that's what people are supposed to do. In my jobs, requests for time off beyond 2 weeks were regularly denied by management. These federal workers are spoiled.
