House Democrats brace for some defections among moderates on impeachment of Trump

House Democratic leaders are bracing for some defections among a group of moderate Democrats in swing districts who are concerned a vote to impeach President Trump could cost them their seats in November.

Lawmakers and senior aides are privately predicting they will lose more than the two Democrats who opposed the impeachment inquiry rules package in late September, according to multiple officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk frankly. Two senior Democratic aides said the total could be as many as a half-dozen, while a third said the number could be higher.

Predictions about some defections come as a core group of centrists from districts Trump won in 2016 are having second thoughts. While many knew impeachment would never be popular in their GOP-leaning districts, some have been surprised that support hasn’t increased despite negative testimony about Trump from a series of blockbuster hearings last month.

A single rock can start a landslide.

Getting close to minimum votes required, without any defections from GOP, is not really the look that over 30 Democrats wish to project.

When's the floor vote again?

Not scheduled?

Political theater. Dems will let some vote against to provide them an excuse to run on back home. They will make sure they have enough votes. GOP simply needs to remind voters these lying scum voted to authorize this clown show to start and are merely trying to cover it up now

To be against this whole farce is to be bi-partisan.

It is up to the GOP opponents running in these districts to let everyone know that their Dem rep voted to open impeachment hearings in the first place, no matter how they will have voted for actual impeachment. At this point, this is actually just as bad as they knew it was a farce to begin with.

I still say they’re using this to wear Trump down (not happening) so they can really remove him from office after they take the Senate next year. Yeah, they’re that deluded.

“Dem Centrists”
“Dem Moderates”

Euphemisms for Democrats elected in red districts.

They are all going to vote present and the Democrats are going to get impeachment with 218 votes. Question is, out of the 218, which Democrat is going to defect?

Exactly! That’s probably what our loser congresswoman will do. I will crawl over broken glass to see that she is not re-elected.

No secret votes in impeachment.

I don't know about the impeachment vote, but it could be done in the Senate.

Not just that they voted to open the investigation, but that they used the investigation in an attempt to railroad the POTUS, deny him due process, deny him legal representation, and ultimately to charge him with “contempt” before the courts even had a chance to rule on the validity of their subpoenas.

It’s one thing to agree to investigate a possible crime. It is quite another to orchestrate the entire investigation in full denial of the rights of the accused. Who do the House Dems think they are, the FBI?
