I expect civil conflict as the different ethnic groups duke it out to get the spoils. The two biggest groups in Guyana are people descended from East Indians and slaves from African.

Of course, Venezuela’s been wanting most of Guyana too.

Over the years the US taxpayer likely has given the people/government there hundreds of millions of dollars. With their upcoming prosperity, will they be paying any of it back? I demand reparations!

Indeed, Guyana only has to look at neighboring Venezuela to see the damage that poorly managed oil wealth can do. That damage wasn't done by oil wealth it was done by communists.

I’ve read somewhere that Amish and Mennonites, who went there from the USA in the last century, own nearly all the farmland there.

Suriname will likely follow the same pattern. Just give it a little time. That whole region of plate collision reeks with oil and gas.

Venezuela, I believe thinks that Guyana should belong to them. A couple of years ago they were making noises about marching in.
