Taiwan investigates spy’s claim Beijing spent US$200 million to influence 2020 presidential election

Authorities in Taiwan have begun an investigation into claims that a self-confessed Chinese spy, who is seeking asylum in Australia, was part of a multimillion-dollar campaign led by Beijing to interfere in its upcoming presidential election.

Officials from the island’s security and investigation agencies are also looking into allegations that Han Kuo-yu, the presidential candidate for the mainland-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) party, accepted a 20 million yuan (US$2.8 million) donation from Beijing in the run-up to his victory in the Kaohsiung mayoral election in November last year.

The government had “taken serious note of the case” and “national security units have set up a committee to follow up” on evidence already collected, the presidential office said in a statement on Saturday.

According to reports by the Australian media, the alleged spy, identified as Wang Liqiang, said Beijing’s military intelligence agencies had directly interfered in the politics of Hong Kong and Taiwan. He also accused Beijing of buying media coverage, infiltrating universities, funnelling donations to favoured candidates and creating thousands of social media accounts to attack Taiwan’s independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party government, The New York Times reported.

The mainland’s intelligence efforts included creating more than 20 media and internet companies to launch “targeted attacks”, and investing about US$200 million over an unspecified period in television stations in Taiwan, the report quoted Wang as saying.

Self-confessed spy Wang Liqiang is seeking asylum in Australia. He said that he had personally helped to funnel donations totalling about 20 million yuan to Han during the 2018 polls, but did not explain how such a large sum of money failed to arouse suspicion.

My bet is the Chicoms prefer the Kuomintang candidate, Han Kuo-Yu.
He doesn’t talk independence and prefers talks with China rather thsn confrontation unlike the current President.

If true, it was over 200 million to get Hillary elected.

Bill and Hill gave China so much stuff in the 1990s, not even funny.

Remember Charlie Trie and the 30+ Chinese Nationals that donated large sums to Clinton and were never prosecuted.

FBI Arrests Chinese Millionaire Once Tied to Clinton $$ Scandal

By BRIAN ROSS, RHONDA SCHWARTZ and ALEX HOSENBALL. Sep 24, 2015,

The FBI has arrested a politically prominent Chinese millionaire, the alleged secret source of foreign money in a campaign finance scandal during the Clinton administration, on charges he lied about why he brought more than $4.5 million in cash into the United States over the last two years.

Ng Lap Seng was arrested in New York last weekend by FBI agents working with federal prosecutors assigned to the public corruption squad in the Southern District of New York, according to federal authorities.

His arrest came on the same day the Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Seattle for a state visit to the United States.

In addition to his role as a prominent real estate developer on the gambling center island of Macau, Ng has close ties to the Chinese government and is listed as a member of a senior advisory group, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

The complaint does not offer details about who the government believes received the cash, other than identifying a “Business Associate-1”. There is no indication of any current ties to the Clintons or the Democratic Party, and a spokesman for the Hillary Clinton Presidential campaign, Brian Fallon, said there had been no contact between the campaign and Ng.

The complaint says Ng brought a suitcase full of $400,000 in cash to the United States on June 13 and later that day brought the suitcase to a meeting with “Business Associate-1” in Queens, New York.

Ng was identified in a 1998 Senate report as the source of hundreds of thousands of dollars illegally funneled through an Arkansas restaurant owner, Charlie Trie, to the Democratic National Committee during the Clinton administration.

“Trie’s contributions purchased access for himself and Ng to the highest levels of our government,” the Senate report said.

Ng and Trie made a number of visits to the White House to attend Democratic National Committee-sponsored events and were photographed with President Bill Clinton and then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. ABC News reported in 1997 that Ng had made six trips to the White House.

Senate investigators said Ng “refused to meet with or answer the investigators questions,” although he was never charged with a crime in the investigation.

Per Wiki:

Ng Lap Seng is the subject of an American investigation, and faces bribery, money laundering and other charges, as he allegedly that he paid bribes via intermediaries totalling US$500,000 to former UN General Assembly president John Ashe.[3][4]

Since October 2015, he has been confined to his New York City apartment on US$50 million bail, with very tight restrictions.[3] As of January 2016, two suspects have pleaded guilty.[4] In March 2016, a third suspect, Francis Lorenzo, deputy ambassador to the United Nations from the Dominican Republic, pleaded guilty.[5]

US prosecutors estimate that Ng’s net worth is in excess of US$1 billion.[3]

Ng Lap Seng was also part of a Democratic fund-raising scandal when Bill Clinton was president, and is mentioned in the Panama Papers.[6]

In July 2017, the U.S. District Court in Manhattan found Ng guilty of all charges he faced, following a month-long trial.[7][8]

Here is an article on the Clintons, Panama Papers, and corruption. If you read it to the end it will turn your stomach.

Inside Panama Papers: Multiple Clinton connections

By Anita Kumar, Marisa Taylor and Kevin G. Hall. McClatchy Washington Bureau

APRIL 16, 2016

https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/election/article72215012.html

Hillary Clinton recently blasted the hidden financial dealings exposed in the Panama Papers, but she and her husband have multiple connections with people who have used the besieged law firm Mossack Fonseca to establish offshore entities.

Among them are Gabrielle Fialkoff, finance director for Hillary Clinton’s first campaign for the U.S. Senate; Frank Giustra, a Canadian mining magnate who has traveled the globe with Bill Clinton; a member of the Chagoury family, which pledged $1 billion in projects to the Clinton Global Initiative; and Chinese billionaire Ng Lap Seng, who was at the center of a Democratic fund-raising scandal when Bill Clinton was president. Also using the Panamanian law firm was the company founded by the late billionaire investor Marc Rich, an international fugitive when Bill Clinton pardoned him in the final hours of his presidency.

Control and influence over the American government is at least as important to the Chicoms as over Taiwan. Probably more important.

Chinese influence of U.S. elections is far more serious than influence from the Russians.

Bill and Hill gave China so much stuff in the 1990s, not even funny.

Bill was impeached for the wrong reasons. Selling influence, and de-classifying important military technology to a "dual-use" or commercial level is what gave the Chinese intercontinental class guidance technology and precision manufacturing.

KMT wants reunification with the mainland and does not want confrontation. However, they are social conservatives. It is the party that fought Japan and China and then retreated to Taiwan shortly after WW2.

DDP does not support reunification and frequently confronts Communist China. However, they are social liberals. Many believe the current President is a lesbian. Therefore, Taiwan became the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage.

Both parties have pros and cons, but I think the DDP has grown in popularity because people fear China more than social liberalism.

A bribery scandal for the KMT candidate will hurt the entire party because people already view them as weak toward China. Now, they will think they are in bed with China.
