A group of black state lawmakers are calling for New Jersey to examine its historic role in slavery and possibly pay reparations to its black residents.

Leaders of the state’s Legislative Black Caucus on Thursday introduced a bill that would establish the New Jersey Reparations Task Force.

If approved, the panel would research the history of slavery in the Garden State, any racial discrimination and disparity that stemmed from it, and how the state could help make up for it.

Um, if I remember from my history courses, NJ wasn’t a slave state.

Collecting it from the Tony Soprano-types over there should prove interesting.

Don’t let history get in the way of a good progressive whine fest

However New Jersey had slaves since it was a dutch colony and abolished Slavery in 1804 and slaves were held until 1865

Reparations are stupid, nobody today was a slave and nobody today was a slave owner.

Well there were slave states and there were slave states. Some states, and I think NJ was one of them, that did a kind of rolling emancipation. Slaves might be freed on their 21st birthdays. What about slaves over 21? They weren’t included. I believe there were still a handful of slaves in the Garden State in 1865.

Wait until minorities are the majority and they control most political and bureaucratic positions.

New Jersey had slaves - they abolished the practice in 1804... but the process of emancipation was gradual, not too unlike New York. There was a process of indentured servitude for the children of slave mothers. The last slaves were freed in 1865 with the passage of the 13th amendment.

While it was north of the Mason-Dixon line, slavery wasn’t uncommon in New Jersey. From my middle school history classes, they mentioned big slave and ex-slave communities in and near New Brunswick and Paramus.

All of this does nothing for the idea of reparations, though... as none of those slaves are still alive.

How many black residents of New Jersey are descents of the few NJ slaves?

Like Elizabeth Warren who sat at the feed of relatives as a small child as they told vague stories of their being told by others that there had been Native Americans in their family and "no one can take those feelings of closeness to them from those stories away from me."

Now the NJ reparations money will cause people to say "Yes, yes I'm beginning to have the feelings. The vibes are there. There were slaves in my long ago past. Gimme the money."

The whites in NJ should be grateful that blacks have made the NJ cities like Newark and Paterson so beautiful and welcoming to everyone...a national treasure for sure... :-)

“Um, if I remember from my history courses, NJ wasn’t a slave state.”

When free money is at stake for certain people, you would be amazed how its historical status can change.

I know how you feel but isn’t it highly probable that like the US Income Tax the new reparations from whites will be confiscated as deductions from all financial matters of whites? Not a bill later on.

Paycheck, direct deposits, tax refunds, sale of a house, sale of a car, any kind of fee for a service. Gone before we can spend it.

To get revenge against us for someone who did something in long gone slave days? When slave catchers and dealers like Kamala Harris’s relatives got money to sell humans into slavery. She’ll take some reparations, too. And Ihlan Omar (had no US slave relatives),Oprah,Beyonce,Stephen Curry ($37 million salary), LeBron James ($35 million salary). Dig deep in your bank account.

Complaining out loud about reparations with get us one year
in federal prison. New 2021 law.

I guess all the welfare, social services and the public service jobs that only seem to go to African Americans isn’t enough payback!
