Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that the Senate cannot dismiss the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, meaning there will be a trial.
“I don’t think there’s any question that we have to take up the matter. The rules of impeachment are very clear, we’ll have to have a trial. My own view is that we should give people the opportunity to put the case on,” McConnell told reporters after being asked about dismissing the articles of impeachment.
Most Republican senators refused to rule out voting to remove Trump from office in an impeachment trial over the Ukraine scandal when contacted by the Daily Caller at the end of October.

Which means there would be no trial — the political equivalent of a mistrial to throw into the mix already including the two-plus years of the Mueller hunt and the ongoing inquiry of U.S. Attorney John Durham into “Russiagate” as the country approaches the 2020 election.
This process — the refusal by the Senate to approve a “Motion to Proceed” — is how the Senate should flush articles of impeachment from the record as it stands today. Invite the House to begin again if it wants to, but using due process if it does, and backed by a bipartisan majority.

I read somewhere that senators would have to attend the hearings 6 days a week, making it impossible for the senators that are presidential candidates to campaign. Maybe it is part of the plan to drag this out while denying them their witnesses?

Name them. With GOP retirements piling up the House is firmly in Dem hands. The vulnerable Senators in 2020 are nearly all GOP: Collins, Gardner, etc. The Dems will happily give up a few swing district House seats to gain control of the Senate.

Yeah, well, even if they did remove Trump there is nothing stopping him from running in the 2020 election anyway. Impeachment does not disqualify you from holding the office again in the future, and he hasn’t served 2 terms.
If he runs, he’s guaranteed the nomination and practically guaranteed to win in the general. I would say by an even bigger margin if they do impeach and remove him.

By even discussing this, or answering questions on this process, Mitch knows he is telegraphing to the anti-American coup plotters to keep going !
And yes, there is a legitimate path for the Senate to nullify the house process, and that is what he should be loudly telegraphing !!
It is the way to force the house to either stop, or carry out their illigitate ambush coup attempt following proper parliamentary order.
By Mitch even being vocal on this, he is motivating both disorder, the ongoing coup attempt, and the possible end of our Constitution and liberty, if these immoral back stabbing anti-Americans are continually allowed to act against America, and to abuse the Constitution!
All correct. Majority Leader McConnell by refusing to gather facts and green lighting this ongoing coup makes the GOP as an institution co-conspirators in the coup against President Trump and no less.

Rules might require a trial, but I bet they don’t specify how quickly it is required. Might be an imaginative man could find a lot of pressing business the Senate needs to attend to first. Unfortunately, Mitch doesn’t seem imaginative.

Do you trust Romney, Murkowski, and Susan Collins to vote nay on impeachment? I don’t. All they need is one more Rino, preferably one who is retiring next year. And we won’t get any help from democrats. They voted unanimously to have this “inquiry”. Sure, most of them voted against impeachment earlier in the year, but that was then, and this is now. They now can see they have no hope of winning the election. They had Uncle Joe as an extra ace, just in case, but obviously, and especially with the Burisma scandal, he’s out. He’s barely competent. And now that the rest of the candidates are pushing a 52 trillion dollar health care plan, They have nothing. They KNOW that when RBG dies, the jig is up. And they’ll do ANYTHING to keep the court liberal.
Having said all that, I still have hope, because God can do ANYTHING He wants, and if He wants Trump to remain president, he will.
McConnell cannot reasonably resort to “rules” when the House has violated all sorts of rules.
He certainly can and will. Collins, Romney, etc., will demand it and without their votes he is minority leader.
