Merkel: East German upbringing influenced my leadership style
Deutsche Welle ^ | 11.09.2019 | ed/dr (dpa, Reuters)

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday that her leadership style is partly shaped by her upbringing in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Merkel made the remarks in an interview with German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung a day ahead of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“For 35 years, I experienced the official opinion as different from my own,” Merkel said, referring to the communist leadership of the former East Germany. “I was alone with my opinion, or shared it with very few people. That’s why it does not bother me when others see things differently.”

The chancellor has successfully pushed through several divisive policies during her 14 years in power, a fact that she credits to her youthful experience of having a dissenting opinion. …

So basically she can’t be wrong. If she doesn’t remember something it was just her bad memory. Kind of like everybody testifying at the coup.

“Remember that Marcus Wolf, Stasi chief helped the U.S. set up DHS.”

Yes and a KGB general too. Isn’t that sweet? It’s almost as if they had everything waiting.

How much of an embrace of Christianity is it if the patriarch is a KGB man himself?

It’s all fake. I think he sees that the only way to save Russia is through Christianity.

I didn’t say I thought he believed it.

Actually, it’s quite odd, isn’t it?

Communism and Christianity are at odds.

Has he decided that a semi dictatorship is better than communism right now?

I dunno.

I was watching some of the speeches at the anniversay for the Berlin wall coming down in 89.

I didn’t hear any mention of Reagan, Thatcher, or the Pope. I was all just as if somehow, the wall just magically fell over.

There was also talk about how east Germans still feel like second class citizens. I couldn’t help but think they have now fallen to third class citizens behind the Muslim invaders that Merkel has welcomed with opened arms (or maybe legs).

Communism and Christianity are at odds.

Back then we had a Pope that opposed the Communists. Now we have a Communist Pope.

I don’t think this guy is a Christian :)

I REALLY don’t believe he thinks Christ rose from the dead.

Did you see this story from three days ago? Same old problem of rewriting history, particularly when it comes to people like Reagan and Thatcher.

Yes, that 30s something guy who thought Reagan made the cold war more intense, and couldn’t grasp why, maybe, that might have something to do with the wall coming down.

It seems the German education system is on the same path as ours.

  1. The entire school system shall be under the supervision of the state.

  2. Parents and guardians shall have the right to decide whether children shall receive religious instruction.

  3. Religious instruction shall form part of the regular curriculum in state schools, with the exception of non-denominational schools. Without prejudice to the state’s right of supervision, religious instruction shall be given in accordance with the tenets of the religious community concerned. Teachers may not be obliged against their will to give religious instruction.

  4. The right to establish private schools shall be guaranteed. Private schools that serve as alternatives to state schools shall require the approval of the state and shall be subject to the laws of the Länder. Such approval shall be given when private schools are not inferior to the state schools in terms of their educational aims, their facilities or the professional training of their teaching staff and when segregation of pupils according to the means of their parents will not be encouraged thereby. Approval shall be withheld if the economic and legal position of the teaching staff is not adequately assured.

  5. A private elementary school shall be approved only if the education authority finds that it serves a special educational interest or if, on the application of parents or guardians, it is to be established as a denominational or interdenominational school or as a school based on a particular philosophy and no state elementary school of that type exists in the municipality.

  6. Preparatory schools shall remain abolished.
German Basic Law, Article 7
The education system there has been on a bad path for a long time.

Taqiyya

Czeslaw Milosz used "ketman," a variant of the Persian word for Taqiyya, to describe the situation in Communist Poland. People not only didn't speak their own opinion. They went overboard in expressing the party line, while inwardly feeling contempt for it. They made every outer show of conformity, while not believing a word of it.

People are using Taqiyya to mean a subversive strategy of gaining power, while what Milosz and Merkel are talking about is more of survival strategy. Merkel wasn't saying she was working towards some goal that diverged from Communist orthodoxy, or that she loudly proclaimed the orthodoxy to hide her true opinion. I think she's saying that she kept quiet and went her own way without making noise about it.
