UC Berkeley instructor calls rural Americans 'bad people who have made bad life decisions’

Said they deserve 'uncomfortable' lives

A UC Berkeley graduate student and instructor took to Twitter on Wednesday to vent about his repulsion for rural Americans and why they deserve to live "uncomfortable" lives.

Jackson Kernion, a graduate student who has taught at least 11 philosophy courses at the university, posted that he "unironically embrace[s] the bashing of rural Americans."

"They, as a group, are bad people who have made bad life decisions," he said in the since-deleted tweet. "Some, I assume, are good people. But this nostalgia for some imagined pastoral way of life is stupid and we should shame people who aren't pro-city."

According to Campus Reform, the Twitter thread started with Kernion advocating against affordable health care solutions for rural Americans, saying that "Rural Healthcare Should be expensive! And that expense should be borne by those who choose rural America!"

"Same goes for rural broadband. And gas taxes," he argued. "It should be uncomfortable to live in rural America. It should be uncomfortable to not move."

Evidently Kernion believes that rural living Americans are purposely rejecting the more "efficient" city-dwelling life, and thus should bear the consequences of more expense.

Though Kernion may have been intending to make economic arguments for his beliefs, his tweets had quickly devolved into ad hominem attacks on rural Americans.

After facing some backlash, Kernion did seem to apologize for his tone, which he says came across as "way crasser and meaner" than he believes himself to be.

I really wonder if this nitwit realizes that ALL of the FOOD grown that THEY EAT is grown by these rural Americans who have supposedly made ‘bad decisions’.

The overt idiocy on display is heartbreaking.

This is what is wrong with the socialists.

In this country we are supposed to have the freedom to decide how we want to live. Socialists like this man think anything different is wrong, we are to live like them. If they choose to be vegetarian, they want everyone to be vegetarian...if they don’t want to own firearms, no one should.

The audacity of socialists is unbelievable to me and they are so sure of their choices they want to force them on others.

As a practical matter if there are no rural Americans, where does he think his food will come from? The socialists have thought of that too. I have had them tell me we should import all of our food. The same people who want everything fresh and organic want to import all of our food from other countries. I can think of only one reason for this; to make controlling the food supply much easier. Whoever controls the food controls the people.

When Russia was the Communist Soviet Union they forced most of the citizens to move from their villages into the big cities. Same commie mindset

Actually, the reverse was true.

<< Kernion believes that rural living Americans are purposely rejecting the more “efficient” city-dwelling life >>

Yes, fighting bumper-to-bumper traffic in L.A. to take an hour (or more) to merely get across town is so efficient. As is waiting 3 hours in the ER. And let’s not forget big city bureaucracy itself, well-known for its efficiency. And what could possibly be a more efficient use of one’s money than to pay 7 figures for a house not much larger than a garage?

So Jason’s faculty photo was taken in a rural part of the Rockies. Hypocrite!

Educated Indoctrinated at Harvard in Philosophy. Hell of a self-inflicted handicap to endure through life.

I did not realize that UC Berkeley had fallen so low as to hire faculty members with wine cellar IQs.

From his page: << When not philosophizing, he likes to go hiking >>

In rural areas, I presume from that photograph. He just doesn’t think anyone should be allowed to live out there. He and his comrades want everyone to be packed like sardines into cities, and keep the rest of the land as a playground for the socialist elite.

Yes, us dumb hicks. I don’t even faintly regret my 2 acres. 6 miles from a bustling town of 45,000 and 200 miles from the nearest cockroach nest of a “city”. Just a couple miles from a Colorado mountain fed river and plenty of farms and ranches with animals and crops in close proximity. Some folks prefer the hustle and bustle of a city and some folks enjoy a little breathing space and a clear zone to know if a roach comes a calling with intentions other than honorable.

I just read the article instead of just the headline I responded to. If I could, I would ask him one question: Why don't you go into the hills of Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, the Ozarks and bash them yourself. Face to face. Mano e mano?

The man actually reveals the essential divide in our country, urban v rural/suburb. They have not been out to actually meet these people or know what they do, so they are easily characterized.

Lol. Good points on all. The effers have totally messed up one of our best states. Now they are moving on to Colorado...another of our great states. Then they have the gall to blame it on the true backbone that made this country great...white men. But let’s keep letting more welfare dependent people in. And let’s keep making victims. And ginning up class warfare. And attacking the middle class. And taking more of our money. And spending it on all kind of worthless shit all over the planet. They definitely have a recipe for success.

(See tag line.)

If your car breaks down on the side of the road, would you rather be in Brooklyn or in Winterset IA?
