Germany greatly benefits from the rules-based global order and should do more to secure its success, German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said in a speech delivered Thursday at the Bundeswehr University in Munich.

Kramp-Karrenbauer noted that allies are increasingly asking for Berlin to play a proactive role in global security.

“A country of our size, with our economic and technological power, our geostrategic position and global interests, cannot just stand on the sidelines and watch,” she said. “Germany must participate in international debates and drive them forward.” […]

In an earlier interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, she urged Berlin to take an increasingly active role in military engagements abroad.

Germany must “openly deal with the fact that we, like every other country in the world, have our own strategic interests,” Kramp-Karrenbauer told the Süddeutsche Zeitung. …

True.

The statement was a little bizarre.

Yes they may be powerful in some areas, but their military? In 2019?

They are thinking of glory days past

Or maybe not. I don’t know much about their current military. Except that they don’t spend a heck of a lot on it.

First you’d have to actually fund a reasonable military. That means you would have to triple or quadruple your defense spending.

Then you’d have to grow a spine.

Oh, a time machine would be helpful since you slackasses have been sitting around doing nothing for generations - while lecturing everybody else about how you’d do things so much smarter and better and wouldn’t make this mistake or that - if you cared to take your thumbs out of your asses and actually do something which of course, you don’t.

At this point Germany, just STFU. We should pull our remaining troops out and just go our separate ways.

As part of that active defense Germany pledges to have at least 3 working Leopards by the end of the year and to buy new tape recorders for its intelligence services - the old palm-sized ones from the 1970’s are nearing EOL.

What they really want is to put all of the other EU member states’ military forces under German control.

That’s been the plan for decades, although under a “European” umbrella. Parts of the military forces of the Netherlands, Croatia, Slovakia and a few other countries are already under direct German control. The wrong type of leader gets in over in Germany and that could accelerate; certainly Macron is open to it.

Wow. Didn’t one of them say they needed a European military now that Trump is in power?

Yes; several of them did, and even Macron. was pushing for it. I would say their extreme TDS is driving it.
